Good evening, today is Wednesday, October 26th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Services for Eva R. Tavarez of Alpine will be Friday. She died Saturday in Fort Stockton at age 81.
Rosary will be recited at 2 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will follow with Reverend Victorino Loresca officiating.
Burial will be at Holy Angel Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Eternity Funeral Home.
Eva was born November 18, 1940, in Raymondville and, starting at age 12, she worked in a dime store and later worked in California.
After returning to Texas in the early ‘70s, she worked many jobs as a single mother to provide for her six children. She later married Ruben J. Tavarez.
Eva was preceded in death by two daughters, a grandson and a brother. Surviving are three children, 18 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
Candidates for the Brewster County Midterm elections November 8 met at the Alpine School Administration Building last week to answer questions and debate over a variety of topics.
Running for Brewster County Judge are Republican Greg Henington and Democrat Oscar Cobos.
Henington is ready to use his experience in the Brewster County Health District, Groundwater District, as a fire chief and business owner to provide direct solutions as a judge.
Henington: “As I wind down my career in business, I feel like I’m uniquely qualified to contribute what I’ve learned over the last many years. Thomas Edison once said, ‘vision without execution is simply a hallucination.’ And as your next county judge, I’m here to execute the vision.”
Cobos is relying on his experience volunteering throughout the community and fighting for property rights and against special interest to have an accountable judge position.
Cobos: “What’s so important is my vision as your county judge if you vote me in is to pull people together. Because we’re struggling economically, struggling after Covid, so we have to pull together beyond party issues and work helping one another and being a blessing.”
For County Commissioner Precinct Two, Republican Mark Chiles challenges incumbent Sara Colando.
She is using her availability for her constituents, hours of trainings, successful projects and her championing of South County to try and keep the ball rolling on projects for Precinct 2.
Colando: “Being a public servant and having the opportunity to help people has been the most fulfilling job I could have ever hoped for. I feel honored and blessed every day to be your commissioner and I hope that you’ll allow me to continue to serve.”
Chiles is looking to make an impact in the South County community and is willing to learn whatever necessary for improved healthcare, E.M.S. system and infrastructure.
Chiles: “I know that going forward I can learn what it takes to do this job and you’ll really appreciate the service that I can provide. I don’t know all the answers, or any of them for sure, but I do know that I have the tenacity of a honey badger to go after and maybe find the answers and let’s come back and create solutions.”
The Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering is accepting entries for the annual “Carrying on the Tradition Youth Poetry Contest.”
The divisions include grades Kindergarten through second for level 1, Grades 3 and 4 for level 2, grades 5 and 6 for level 3, grades 7 and 8 for level 4 and grades 9 through 12 for level 5.
The top three places in each division will receive a special plaque and the opportunity to share their poem during the session “Carrying on the Tradition” at Sul Ross on February 18.
