Brewster County commissioners earlier today (TUESDAY) agreed to take out a tax note to finance the construction of visitor centers in Terlingua and Marathon.
County Judge Greg Henington spoke before the court took a vote on the effort:
HENINGTON1: “My recommendation is that we proceed with issuing the debt in the amount of $2.5 million for the purposes of building two visitor centers, one in Marathon and one in Terlingua.” (0:15)
The motion passed unanimously.
Brewster County Commissioners will hold a special commissioners court next week, Tuesday Sept. 15.

Also earlier today (TUESDAY), officials in Jeff Davis County temporarily tabled a road-use agreement with one of the federal contractors working on the Trump administration’s plans for border walls in the Big Bend area.
On the agenda for the county commissioners meeting was an agreement over improvements to Chispa Road, a rugged stretch near U.S. 90 by Valentine that runs along the Texas-Mexico border through Jeff Davis and Presidio counties.
After deliberating in executive session, officials agreed to hold a special meeting to consider the agreement on Monday, Sept. 14 at 6:00 p.m. They also said they’d make the contract agreement public ahead of the special meeting.
Similar road-use agreements have come up in previous months in other counties, and activists have urged county officials to deny the agreements, which they say directly support the construction of the wall. (x)

On Friday, in recognition and honor of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks,the Big Bend Border Patrol Sector will hold a memorial and remembrance ceremony.
The event takes place at the Alpine Border Patrol Station at 9:00 a.m. The ceremony will be at the station’s 9/11 Memorial, which is made of recovered ruins of the World Trade Center.

Also on Friday, the Big Bend Arts Council hosts its next gallery show, “Delicious…All About Food.”
An opening reception for the show is Friday, Sept. 11 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The show runs until October 27.

Next week, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host another West Texas meeting on the New World screwworm.
In a continued effort to teach about the threat the parasitic fly poses, the service will host a meeting in El Paso to inform residents about what to look for, how to report potential infestations and how to maintain external parasite control on livestock and pets.
The New World Screwworm event will be held from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at El Paso, 1380 A&M Circle.
There is no cost to attend, and light refreshments will be available.

On September 15 for National Voter Registration Day make sure you’re ready for the upcoming election.
If you’re unsure if you’re registered to vote, you can stop by the university center mall and head to the voter registration table for information on voting and getting registered. That will be Sept. 15.

Next week, head to the Brewster County Elections open house to learn about the election process and meet local officials.
On September 15 from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m., you can meet your county election officials and register to vote. You’ll also be able to learn more about voting by mail, what it takes to become an election worker, and learn about the election process and how the county ensures your vote counts.
The open house takes place at the Judge Val Clark Beard Office Complex.

Los comisionados del condado de Brewster acordaron hoy (martes) emitir un pagaré fiscal para financiar la construcción de centros de visitantes en Terlingua y Marathon.
El juez del condado, Greg Henington, habló antes de que la junta votara sobre la iniciativa:
CITO: “Mi recomendación es que procedamos a emitir la deuda por un monto de 2,5 millones de dólares con el fin de construir dos centros de visitantes: uno en Marathon y otro en Terlingua”.
La moción fue aprobada por unanimidad.
Los comisionados del condado de Brewster celebrarán una sesión especial la próxima semana, el martes 15 de septiembre.

También hoy (martes), las autoridades del condado de Jeff Davis pospusieron temporalmente la aprobación de un acuerdo de uso de carreteras con uno de los contratistas federales que trabajan en los planes de la administración Trump para construir muros fronterizos en la zona de Big Bend.
En la agenda de la reunión de los comisionados del condado figuraba un acuerdo sobre mejoras en Chispa Road, un tramo accidentado cerca de la carretera federal U.S. 90, a la altura de Valentine, que recorre la frontera entre Texas y México a través de los condados de Jeff Davis y Presidio.
Tras deliberar en sesión privada, los funcionarios acordaron celebrar una reunión especial para analizar el acuerdo el lunes 14 de septiembre a las 6:00 p. m. Asimismo, informaron que harían público el contrato antes de dicha reunión.
En meses anteriores han surgido acuerdos similares de uso de carreteras en otros condados, y diversos activistas han instado a las autoridades locales a rechazarlos, argumentando que apoyan directamente la construcción del muro. (x)

Este viernes, en reconocimiento y honor al 25.º aniversario de los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre, el Sector Big Bend de la Patrulla Fronteriza llevará a cabo una ceremonia conmemorativa.
El evento tendrá lugar en la Estación de la Patrulla Fronteriza de Alpine a las 9:00 a. m. La ceremonia se realizará junto al monumento conmemorativo del 11 de septiembre de la estación, el cual está construido con restos recuperados del World Trade Center.

Como parte de sus esfuerzos continuos para educar sobre la amenaza que representa esta mosca parásita, el servicio celebrará una reunión en El Paso para informar a los residentes sobre qué señales observar, cómo reportar posibles infestaciones y cómo mantener el control de parásitos externos en el ganado y las mascotas.
El evento sobre el gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo se llevará a cabo de 5:30 p. m. a 8:00 p. m. en el Centro de Investigación y Extensión Texas A&M AgriLife de El Paso, ubicado en 1380 A&M Circle.
La asistencia es gratuita y se ofrecerán refrigerios ligeros.
