Our Congressman Tony Gonzales has introduced the Curbing Offenses on Policing Services Act, or COPS, in the U.S. House of Representatives.
It would increase penalties for anyone who assaults first responders and law enforcement officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon.
Gonzales said crime is on the rise in our country, citing an incident last week in which five San Antonio police officers were shot at in the line of duty. He said our first responders and law enforcement officers work tirelessly to keep us safe and they risk their lives in the process.
Anyone who assaults a police officer or emergency responder should face severe consequences, he said.
Gonzales is a member of the Congressional Law Enforcement Caucus.
The Marathon Public Library has announced it is one of two honorable mention libraries for Library Journal’s Best Small Library in America Award.
The award was established in 2005 to honor the U.S. public library that most profoundly demonstrates outstanding service to populations of 25 thousand or less.
Library Journal Executive Editor Lisa Peet said small and rural libraries are the heart and soul of their communities in so many ways.
She said this award shines a spotlight on those that go above and beyond, often with a modest staff and tight budget in a physically-remote service area.
Library Board President Erin Albright said the library is the town’s community and cultural center.
She said it is where people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities come together to learn, connect and create, all of which help strengthen the community.
The success of this commitment is reflected in the growth of the numbers of people visiting the library and engaging in its programs and services over the past 10 years.
Library use has increased from 841 in 2013 to more than 13 thousand visits last year, thanks to the quality of its services and the breadth of its programs.
The winning library and two finalist libraries will be honored at the 2023 Association for Rural and Small Libraries Conference later this month.
All three libraries will be featured in the September, 2023, issue of Library Journal and online.
Mechanical issues have delayed the Grand Opening for the new Amigos Restaurant at 105 East Avenue E for one week to 5:30 Thursday, September 14.
Chris Herrera has leased the space formerly occupied by the Old Gringo for three years and has created a sports bar and family restaurant. We will confirm the new date and time as it gets closer.
A new application category will be open until September 15 for the Texas Travel Industry Recovery Grant Program for Texas businesses in the tourism, travel and hospitality industries.
It provides for applicants to now receive up to 250 thousand dollars to recover from losses suffered in the Covic Pandemic. It originally was created in the 87 th Legislature to administer 180 million dollars in the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds under the American Rescue Plan Act.
These one-time grants are to reimburse eligible costs to these qualifying businesses.

Gonzales dijo que la delincuencia está aumentando en nuestro país, citando un incidente la semana pasada en el que cinco agentes de policía de San Antonio recibieron disparos en cumplimiento de su deber.
Dijo que nuestros socorristas y agentes del orden trabajan incansablemente para mantenernos seguros y arriesgan sus vidas en el proceso.
Cualquiera que agreda a un oficial de policía o a un socorrista debe enfrentarse a graves consecuencias, dijo.
