According to forecasters with the National Weather Service, cooler weather is on the way to the Big Bend area this weekend.
Tropical storm Lorena is expected to move across West Texas and southeast New Mexico tomorrow (FRIDAY), bringing moisture with it that will increase our chances for r ain. Forecasters say a cold front is also expected to move through the region this weekend, further cooling temperatures in the Big Bend.

Earlier this week (WEDNESDAY), the local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects brought together local leaders for a discussion on the state of education in Alpine.
The talk–which included Carlos Hernandez, president of Sul Ross State University and Michelle Rinehart, the superintendent of Alpine ISD–covered the successes and challenges facing the district and university.
During the panel, Rinehart said recent successes at Alpine ISD include improving the academic standings at the elementary school.
RINEHART1: “In our most recent ratings that just came out just a few weeks ago, our elementary school has increased their rating to a 74, which is a C-rating. That’s up 15 percentage points in the last two years alone, which is incredible.” (0:11)
The state has given the district overall a B rating, which Rinehart said she wants to improve to an A.
When covering challenges, Rinehart said there were a few, including being one of the most underfunded districts in the state.
RINEHART2: “Funding remains a concern, because without adequate funding we can’t pay competitive salaries, right? We want to recruit and retain the best and the brightest teachers across West Texas, and that’s hard when you’re the lowest-paying school district in West Texas.” (0:15)
However, Rinehart said being underfunded hasn’t stopped the district from bringing improvements to the district despite the lack of investment from the state.

Next week, catch an early screening of “The Senior,” the story of Mike Flynt, who returned to the Sul Ross football team at the age of 59 – becoming the one of the oldest college football players in NCAA history.
In an interview with Sul Ross, Flynt talked about returning to the team after nearly three decades.
FLYNT1: “It was, it was, as I said, the most difficult thing I’ve ever done physically but the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done–the friendships, the ability to do things again.” (0:13)
The screening takes place Monday, September 8 at Jackson Field in Alpine.
Doors open at 8 p.m., and the screening starts at 8:30 p.m.

Sul Ross, and the Borderlands Research Institute, have announced their fall schedule for guided hikes up Hancock Hill.
The series of hikes are led by professionals who will take you through the hike, and along the way provide insights to the land and wildlife in the region.
The first hike of the season is next weekend on September 13.
All of the hikes this fall begin at 9 a.m., and take roughly two hours. The hikes are free and open to the public.
Reservations are required and can be made online at sulross.edu/guided-hikes.

Later this fall, head to the historic Prude Ranch in Fort Davis for the 48th annual cycle fest.
The annual event is a scenic bike tour, taking cyclists through the Davis Mountains on easy routes and challenging hills.
The tour provides three different routes at 34, 54 and 73 miles.
The race is September 21.

A principios de esta semana (MIÉRCOLES), la organización local sin fines de lucro Alpine Community Projects reunió a líderes locales para un debate sobre el estado de la educación en Alpine.

Sul Ross y el Borderlands Research Institute han anunciado su calendario de otoño para caminatas guiadas por Hancock Hill.
La serie de caminatas está dirigida por profesionales que lo acompañarán a lo largo del recorrido y, a lo largo del camino, le brindarán información sobre la tierra y la vida silvestre de la región.
La primera caminata de la temporada será el próximo fin de semana, el 13 de septiembre.
