Tuesday night, city council officials discussed a proposed partnership between Alpine and Alpine ISD over the use and maintenance of Manuel Payne Field at Kokernot Park.
During the council meeting, Alpine ISD superintendent Michelle Rinehart said the idea was to work with the city to get the field into better condition. And doing that, she said, would take “pretty significant improvements” like upgrading the playing surface and replacing the scoreboard.
RINEHART1: “This might be a multi-year, multi-phased project, right? We may not be able to do everything we’d like to do all at once, but we really do feel like working together and working with softball interested folks in the community, there’s a lot we can do to help improve this field for our kids and for our community.” (0:17)
Rinehart said eventually, the district could return to using the field for its middle school and high school softball teams. And it could also become the home of future softball tournaments and other events.
Council members were favorable of a potential partnership.
Rinehart said later this month, the district will hold a public meeting to get input from the community on what improvements they’d like to see to Manuel Payne Field.

Later this week, join the Alpine Public Library for a fundraiser at Spicewood restaurant.
On Friday, September 5, 50 percent of the proceeds made from a lunch and dinner special will go to the library.
Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and dinner from 4:30 to 9 p.m.

This month, the Museum of the Big Bend will host the 39th Annual Trappings of Texas, the nation’s longest-running exhibit and sale dedicated to Western art and custom cowboy gear,
The opening weekend for the event will be Sept. 18 through the 20, and will feature a lineup of events, from live demonstrations and parties to a live auction. This year, the Museum celebrates watercolorist Tim Oliver as the 2025 Trappings of Texas premier artist.
The exhibit will remain on display through November 1.

A veteran resource pop-up is coming to Alpine.
On September 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., several agencies will come together to assist and provide veterans, servicemembers and their families with resources, employment opportunities and other resources.
The event takes place at the Morgan University Center at Sul Ross State University.

Next month, the college of education at Sul Ross presents a lecture with Ashlie Crosson, the 2025 national teacher of the year.
The event – part of the Poindexter Lecture Series – will be Monday, October 20 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Espino Center.

In the fall, the Moon & Tunes music fest returns to Fort Davis after a 30-year hiatus.
The lineup for the festival’s comeback includes William Beckmann and Jason Boland, among others.
