Porte’rs thriftway grocery chain confirmed reports friday that it has reached agreement with lowe’s market of Littlefield, Texas, to begin operating all Porter’s stores on December 1.
We have been trying all morning to confirm unofficial reports including on Facebook. But we got official confirmation early this afternoon. Porter’s has stores in alpine, Marfa, Fort Davis and presidio, among others. The closest Lowe’s store here is in Ft Stockton. Porter’s has 2 stores in alpine since acquiring it from baesa’s many years ago.
It recently closed the 2nd street store, doing all business at the store at 5th st and Sul Ross avenue while the 2nd street store underwent a total rebuild. Then all operations moved back to 2nd and the 5th St store closed for good.
We hope to get more information in the coming days.
Our congressman Tony Gonzalez said Friday he met in Eagle pass Thursday with Elon musk, whom he called one of the most vocal advocates for fixing our border crisis.
He said the Tesla founder and C.E.O. of space x owner, in his words, “has brought more attention to the southern border than our own president.”
Gonzalez said he is confident that the meeting will shed light on this issue for all Americans to see.
“Border communities are tired of the broken promises and empty rhetoric coming out of Washington,” he said. “The time to act is now.”
Gonzalez said over the last 2 weeks, tens of thousands of migrants have arrived illegally with no end in sight. He said we need to act now on what he called a national security and humanitarian disaster.
Both Alpine and Marfa police departments will join other across the nation in observance of national night out next week.
The event is designed to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community.
It also provides an opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. The state of Texas and select areas celebrate the first Tuesday in October. This will be the first for the Marfa police department from 6 to 9 pm. Tuesday at Coffield park near west Lincoln and ridge streets.
The Alpine Police national night out will be at 6 the same evening at Baines park at 5th St and Gallego avenue. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served at both, along with bouncers, games and giveaways for the kids. Other law enforcement agencies have been invited to take part in observances in their communities.
The movie ‘ultimate fandango’, which was filmed here in 1983, will play at 6.15 today at Rangra theater. It stars Kevin Costner, Judd Nelson and Sam Robards but several locals are in it, including Ken Clouse, Dona ward and the late Bill Ethridge, the only one with the real speaking part. The movie is about 5 college buddies from the University of Texas who embark on a road trip across the mexican border. They later have to face up to certain futures in Vietnam and otherwise. While it was filmed 40 years ago, some local sites in the fil still exist today including sonic drive in, a gas station in Marathon and Marfa cemetery.
