The Noyce en la Frontera Research Initiative for STEM Education at Sul Ross State University is among several preparing for two solar eclipses coming our way in the next year.
An annular eclipse will come next month and a total eclipse will be next April.
An annular solar eclipse happens when the moon appears relatively small in the sky so does not fully cover the disk. The public is invited to a Zoom webinar at 4:30 Tuesday when Sul Ross Physics Professor Dr. Anirban Bhattacharjee will discuss “Faces of our Sun.”
And University of Texas at San Antonio Physics Professor Dr. Lindsay Fuller will discuss “Total Eclipses in the Heart of Texas.”
The annular eclipse on Saturday, October 14, will be livestreamed from Uvalde with the help of the National Solar Observatory. The total eclipse on April 8 will be streamed from Eagle Pass, which falls within the Path of Totality. For more information and log-ins, email noyce@sulross.edu
The Big Bend Eno Hella Turkey Shoot will be on Saturday, October 14, at the Big Bend Sportsman Club west of Alpine.
The event from 7 to 5 that day benefits the Sul Ross Range and Wildlife Club.
Martin Benevich hosted the club’s President Jim Westerman and Vice President Juan Celaya on his Second Cup of Coffee recently. He asked Westerman about the Big Bend Shooting Range.
“It’s always been a big resource here True Value or Dodson Guns.”
The shoot is named after Eno Hella and Martin asked Jim who that was. “Eno was one of the founders of the club they came up with the Turkey Shoot.”
Martin asked Vice President Juan Celaya about the Sul Ross Range and Wildlife Club. “We do multiple events Texas Society for Range Management.”
Winners of the several shooting events win a coupon for a frozen turkey from Porters Thriftway. The Shooting Range is south of Highway 90 a short distance west of the U.S. Border Patrol station.
The Big Bend Regional Hospital District got set for the new fiscal year that begins Sunday at its regular meeting Wednesday.
It approved a budget of 4.2 million dollars and the tax rate of 6.6091 cents per 100-dollar valuation, which will bring in the same revenue as the year just ending.
The district is a separate entity from Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Most county hospitals have their own taxing power for indigent patients but our hospital is privately-owned.
So the district including Brewster and Presidio Counties was created for that purpose.
The Board also re-elected Buddy Cavness as its chairman. New board member Valinda Henington is the new vice chairman, Andrea Perez is secretary and Reagan Reed is treasurer.

La Iniciativa de Investigación Noyce en la Frontera para la Educación STEM en la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross es una de varias que se preparan para dos eclipses solares que se avecinan el próximo año.
El próximo mes habrá un eclipse anular y el próximo mes de abril habrá un eclipse total. Un eclipse solar anular ocurre cuando la luna parece relativamente pequeña en el cielo, por lo que no cubre completamente el disco.
El público está invitado a un seminario web de Zoom el martes a las 4:30, donde el profesor de física de Sul Ross, Dr. Anirban Bhattacharjee, hablará sobre “Rostros de nuestro sol”. Y la Dra. Lindsay Fuller, profesora de Física de la Universidad de Texas en San Antonio, hablará sobre “Eclipses totales en el corazón de Texas”.
El eclipse anular del sábado 14 de octubre será transmitido en vivo desde Uvalde con la ayuda del Observatorio Solar Nacional. El eclipse total del 8 de abril se transmitirá desde Eagle Pass, que se encuentra dentro del Camino de la Totalidad.

El Big Bend Eno Hella Turkey Shoot se llevará a cabo el sábado 14 de octubre en el club de Big Bend Sportsman al oeste de Alpine.
El evento de 7 a 5 de ese día beneficia al Club de vida silvestre y campo de tiro de Sul Ross.
Martin Benevich recibió recientemente al presidente del club, Jim Westerman, y al vicepresidente, Juan Celaya. Le preguntó a Westerman sobre el campo de tiro de Big Bend. “Siempre ha sido un gran recurso aquí, True Value o las armas Dodson” mencionó.
La sesión lleva el nombre de Eno Hella y Martin le preguntó a Jim quién era. Contesto: “Eno fue uno de los fundadores del club y se les ocurrió el Turkey Shoot.”
Martin le preguntó al vicepresidente Juan Celaya sobre el Club de vida silvestre y campo de tiro de Sul Ross. Mencionó que hacen múltiples eventos con Sociedad de Texas para el Manejo de Campos.
Los ganadores de los distintos eventos de tiro ganaran un cupón para un pavo congelado de Porters. El campo de tiro está al sur de la autopista 90, a poca distancia al oeste de la estación de la Patrulla Fronteriza.
El Distrito Hospitalario Regional de Big Bend se preparó para el nuevo año fiscal que comienza el domingo en su reunión regular del miércoles.
Aprobó un presupuesto de 4.2 millones de dólares y una tasa impositiva de 6.6091 centavos por valor de 100 dólares, lo que generará los mismos ingresos que el año que acaba de terminar.
El distrito es una entidad separada del Centro Médico Regional Big Bend. La mayoría de los hospitales del condado tienen su propio poder impositivo para los pacientes indigentes, pero nuestro hospital es de propiedad privada.
