Big Bend National Park has announced it will be closed for two weeks starting October 3 to remove non-native aoudad using helicopters and staff trained in aerial shooting.
The aoudad, also known as Barbary sheep, are native to the dry mountains of northern Africa but now thrive in West Texas. They occupy the same habitats as the park’s small population of native desert bighorn sheep and negatively impact the natural ecology of the park.
The Deadhorse Mountains and surrounding areas, including the Dagger Flat Road and Old Ore Road, will be closed. The Mesa de Anguila will be surveyed for bighorn sheep and aoudads on October 9. There will be no lethal control of aoudad on the Mesa de Anguila on that day and all areas of the national park will remain open on the survey date. The affected area is all east of the extension on Highway 385 from Persimmon Gap to Panther Junction and ending just north of Rio Grande Village.

The Sul Ross Small Business Development Center will host its Tenth Women’s Empowerment program next week.
It will bring together diverse women and provide opportunities to help them grow personally and professionally. The speaker will be Sandra Ruiz, Owner of Rio Insurance and Host of the popular Facebook group, Socializando con Sandra.
It will be from noon to 1 Monday at the Alpine Civic Center at 801 West Holland Avenue.

For those not registered to vote in Texas or whose registration has expired, the deadline to register is October 10.
The next election is November 7 with 14 proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution on the ballot.
They include propositions regarding farming and ranching rights, school district taxes and homestead exemptions, wealth tax and more.

The new Amigo Restaurant in the former Old Gringo Biker Club at Avenue E and 5 th Street is calling runners to participate in its Run Club. The weekly event will be from 5 to 8 Wednesday.
To join them just meet at the Amigo Garage at 5:30 and enjoy a walk or run from one to three miles and finish back at Amigo for a free drink.
Participants are encouraged to bring their strollers or kids’ bikes. It’s open to all ages and abilities.

El Parque Nacional Big Bend ha anunciado que estará cerrado durante dos semanas a partir del 3 de octubre para eliminar audad no nativa utilizando helicópteros y personal capacitado en tiro aéreo.
La audad, también conocida como oveja de Berbería, es originaria de las montañas secas del norte de África, pero ahora prospera en el oeste de Texas. Ocupan los mismos hábitats que la pequeña población de borrego cimarrón nativo del desierto e impactan negativamente la ecología natural del parque.
