Good evening, today is Thursday, September 22nd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The new Big Bend Bluegrass Festival will launch in Alpine next month, managed by the Big Bend Bluegrass Association.
The association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the furtherance of bluegrass music in West Texas.
It started more than 20 years ago when Wickett Mayor Harold Ferguson decided that his town needed a bluegrass festival, which ran for 21 years before Covid shut it down.
Harold had been playing bluegrass for years and his wife Carol and daughter Cyndi Purdue, regularly performed with him on stage.
Carol and Cyndi kept the festival in Wickett going after Harold died in 2016 but the Covid pandemic ended that run.
Cyndi has brought it to Alpine, launching October 7 and 8 at the Alpine Civic Center.
It will feature music from The Kody Norris Show, Edgar Loudermilk Band, Bluegrass Express, The Old Rugged Choir and Second Time Around.
Food and drink will be available from concessions in the Civic Center, and space will be set aside for jamming.
The Hotel Parker, formerly Quarter Circle Seven and Ramada before that, is serving as host hotel with special rates for festival attendees, along with several short-term rentals.
The Alpine Police Department is encouraging citizens not to be victims of phishing or other scams.
Do not share any information that could lead to you becoming a victim of fraud. That includes pins, passwords and other personal information.
They are skilled con artists who impersonate government, community and business officials such as law enforcement, local charities and service providers.
Once fraudsters have someone’s personal information, they can use it to make unauthorized purchases, drain financial accounts or even steal someone’s identity.
Remember, don’t take the bait, validate. If you receive a call from an unknown number talking about missed payments, competition earnings, emergencies and such, hang up the phone.
If you believe that there is some validity to the claims, don’t call the number the message provides but call the official number of the organization the original call claimed to be.
Presidio Drag Racing will host the next Head Up and Bracket Racing tournament at the Presidio drag racing strip on Highway 170 at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Spectator tickets are $10 and racers can enter for $75 with a $40 buy back only on the first round. Helmets are required for racers.
The drag strip is 1.28 miles west from the junction of U.S. 67 and Highway 170 right before entering Presidio.
The Alpine Elementary Scholastic Book Fair is coming next week Monday through Friday at the Alpine Elementary School Library during school hours.
Families will be able to visit on family nights Tuesday and Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. and will be able to shop online until October 9.
Parents also will be able to sign up for Book Fair E-Wallet, a digital payment account that can let children shop the fair cash-free.
West of the Pecos Appraisals is even sponsoring an Attendance Challenge for the Elementary School.
The class with the highest attendance through Wednesday will receive $150 for their class to spend at the Book Fair.

Big Bend Conservation Alliance and the Serious Starlight program is helping citizens comply with dark skies lighting by swapping lights for free.
The program is offered to residents with qualifying mercury vapor lights which will be switched for a compliant light for free courtesy of the alliance.
Apart from the $150 value of the free lights, B.B.C.A. will offer a $50 gift card from Porter’s just for participating.
