Good evening, today is Tuesday, September 20th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
This is Homecoming Week at Alpine High School, a time to honor past graduates and welcome them home for a varsity football game.
This week the Bucks host Compass Academy of Odessa Friday in Buck Stadium.
The Homecoming Parade lines up at 5 p.m. Wednesday and moves out at 6 from the Administration Building at 704 West Sul Ross Avenue.
It moves east on Avenue E. to Cherry, turns north to West Del Rio to the bonfire in the field west of the bus barn.
The Bonfire also will include a pep rally at 7 and the naming of the Homecoming Queen.

Another parade will be at this year’s Our Lady of Peace Fall Festival that will start at 1 p.m. October 8. The parade will be from Jackson Field heading West on Gallego Street.
This year’s Marshall will be Sister Sicilia Hernandez, an Alpine native who is now retired but was a nun for more than 60 years and did more than 41 years of missionary work in Africa.
Alpine historian B. J. Gallego said that apart from the 10 nuns that will join Sister Sicilia, the parade is expected to bring a large crowd.
Gallego: “I think that this parade is going to bring several of the families that have left Alpine and are coming specifically for the parade and to congratulate and show our appreciation to Sister Sicilia because she has a legacy that I don’t know if somebody else is going to meet that legacy.”
At 4 p.m. after the parade there will be a mass to celebrate Sister Sicilia and pay tribute to Father Joe Valadez, Monsignor David Fierro and Father Alfredo Villanueva.
Gallego: “I’m going to call this a historical parade because we’ve never paid tribute to the three priests at the same time.”
To participate in the parade, line-up will begin at 11 a.m. at Jackson Field.
A West Texas and law enforcement museum is being planned for the old Jeff Davis County Jail next to the Jeff Davis County Courthouse.
A group calling itself Los Cherifés Viejos, for The Old Sheriffs, plans a museum and law enforcement research center in the refurbished old jail.
Former Brewster County Sheriff Carl C. Williams and Ben Medley, son of former Jeff Davis County Sheriff Wilbur B. Medley, are leading the effort.
They plan to gather stories, artifacts, memorabilia and funding for the project.
Jeff Davis County Judge Curtis Evans and Jeff Davis County Commissioners support the project and location.
The research center would allow students, families and researchers to learn more about law enforcement in the tri-county area and parts of the Trans-Pecos region.
Estimated opening is some time next summer.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales has applauded House and Senate passage of the Blackwell School National Historic Site Act.
He said establishing the Blackwell School as a National Historic Site will cement its rich, complicated legacy for generations to come.
Blackwell School served as the only school for children of Mexican descent in Marfa from 1909 to 1965.
Gonzales said for decades, the Blackwell School has been an important piece of history for Marfa, west Texas and Mexican Americans across the country.
Theresa Pierno, president and C.E.O. of the National Parks Conservation Association, said Blackwell students thrived in spite of rank discrimination of the day.
She said they were given hand-me-down furniture and outdated textbooks and told to bury their native language and leave it behind.
Still many Blackwell students persevered and even saw their school as a place of joy.
The school was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019 and meets qualifications to become a National Historic Site.
If signed into law, the legislation would establish the Blackwell School as a national park site.

La mariscal de este año será la hermana Sicilia Hernández, una nativa de Alpine que ahora está jubilada pero fue monja durante más de 60 años y realizó más de 41 años de trabajo misionero en África.
El historiador de alpine B. J. Gallego dijo que además de las 10 monjas que se unirán a la hermana Sicilia, se espera que el desfile traiga una gran multitud.
A las 4 pm. luego del desfile habrá una misa para celebrar a la hermana Sicilia y rendir homenaje al Padre Joe Valadez, Monseñor David Fierro y el Padre Alfredo Villanueva.
Para participar en el desfile, la alineación comenzará a las 11 a. m. en el campo Jackson.
Se está planificando un museo del oeste de Texas y de la aplicación de la ley para la antigua cárcel del condado de Jeff Davis, junto al juzgado del condado de Jeff Davis.
Un grupo que se autodenomina Los Cherifés Viejos, planea un museo y un centro de investigación policial en la antigua cárcel reformada.
El ex alguacil del condado de Brewster, Carl C. Williams, y Ben Medley, hijo del ex alguacil del condado de Jeff Davis, Wilbur B. Medley, están liderando el esfuerzo.
Planean recopilar historias, artefactos, recuerdos y fondos para el proyecto.
El juez del condado de Jeff Davis, Curtis Evans, y los comisionados del condado de Jeff Davis apoyan el proyecto y la ubicación.
El centro de investigación permitiría a los estudiantes, familias e investigadores aprender más sobre la aplicación de la ley en el área de los tres condados y partes de la región de Trans-Pecos.

Nuestro Congresista Tony Gonzales ha aplaudido la aprobación de la Ley del Sitio Histórico Nacional de la Escuela Blackwell por parte de la Cámara y el Senado.
Dijo que establecer la Escuela Blackwell como un Sitio Histórico Nacional consolidará su legado rico y complicado para las generaciones venideras.
Blackwell School sirvió como la única escuela para niños de ascendencia mexicana en Marfa desde 1909 hasta 1965.
Gonzales dijo que durante décadas, la Escuela Blackwell ha sido una parte importante de la historia de Marfa, el oeste de Texas y los mexicoamericanos de todo el país.
Theresa Pierno, presidenta y directora ejecutiva de la Asociación de Conservación de Parques Nacionales, dijo que los estudiantes de Blackwell prosperaron a pesar de la discriminación de rango del día.
Ella dijo que les dieron muebles de segunda mano y libros de texto obsoletos y les dijeron que enterraran su idioma nativo y lo dejaran atrás.
Aún así, muchos estudiantes de Blackwell perseveraron e incluso vieron su escuela como un lugar de alegría.
