Tomorrow (TUESDAY), the City of Alpine is hosting a budget workshop and city council meeting.
On Tuesday, September 4, beginning at 4 p.m., the council will consider amendments to the proposed budget ahead of its official adoption.
Then, council members will have their regularly scheduled council meeting, where they’re set to discuss, among other agenda items, the proposed partnership between the City of Alpine and Alpine Independent School District over the use and maintenance of the Manuel Payne Field at Kokernot Park.
The council is also set to review and discuss – and potentially act on – the next steps in the hiring process for a city manager.

The lineup for next year’s Lonestar Cowboy Poetry Gathering has been released, and members can get their tickets now.
The gathering starts February 19, and over the course of three days, the event will bring together poets, musicians and storytellers from all over to honor the history and culture of cowboying – performed by those who have lived it.

This week, the local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects will host a state of education panel at the Espino Center at Sul Ross State University.
The discussion will feature Carlos Hernandez, president of Sul Ross State University, and Michelle Rinehart, the superintendent of Alpine Independent School District.
The goal is to give attendees an update from Sul Ross and Alpine ISD – in effort to help people understand both the opportunities and the challenges facing our educational institutions.
The event is Wednesday, September 3 and starts at noon. It’s free and open to the public.

This weekend, For Davis National Historic Site presents “The U.S. Army Camel Experiment.”
You can visit with Doug Baum and his camels as he shares the story of the U.S. Army Camel Experiment and how the hump-backed animals made their way through Fort Davis in the 1850s.
The event happens on Saturday and Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Fort Davis National Historic Site.

And next weekend, head back to the Fort Davis National Historic Site to learn all about plants and pollinators.
On Saturday, September 13, starting at 9 a.m. the park is inviting families for “Come-and-go Bug Roundup” activities. Then at 1 p.m., there will be a presentation on grassland pollinator research taking place at the historic site. And at 3 p.m. learn how to improve bee and butterfly habitat in your own backyard.
All activities require paid admission to the historic site.

The 80th annual Sul Ross College Rodeo is coming to Alpine at the end of the month.
From September 25 to 27, head to the S.A.L.E. arena to see the best college cowboys and cowgirls from the NIRA Lone Star Region going head-to-head.
Tickets will be available at the gate – they’re $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors.
Admissions is free to Sul Ross students and faculty.
