Good evening, today is Thursday, September 1st, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
First weeks without any rain then so much in the last week or so, we heard someone ask if we had been moved to Seattle.
The heavy rainfall in the tri-county area has caused multiple road closures with no signs of stopping this week.
All dirt roads and backcountry campsites in Big Bend National Park are currently closed because of the flooding.
If conditions improve, roads and campsites will open by Monday. Those who had reservations at a backcountry site during this time may contact the park about other options.
The Boquillas port of entry may be closed depending on water levels. Guest can call the National Park visitors center at 477-1158 to check if it’s open.
Access to the interior of The Big Bend Ranch State Park currently is closed as well. For updates call the Barton Warnock Visitors center at 424-3327 or Fort Leaton at 229-3613
Flooding on low-water crossings on the East side of Presidio in the Huckabee Street and Millington Boulevard area caused people to use Highway 170 as an auxiliary route.
In general, if a road is flooded and, especially if it has running water, turn around and find an alternate route.
A Brewster County deputy charged a driver with possession of a controlled substance after a traffic stop east of Alpine Wednesday afternoon.
The driver, identified as Anthony Rene Chacon, claimed ownership of the small baggie containing methamphetamine and he was booked into the Brewster County Jail.
The 35th Annual Marfa Lights Festival will be Friday through Sunday, sponsored by the Marfa Chamber of Commerce.
Brewster County has agreed to participate in the Marfa-based event for the first time this year.
Headquartered at the Presidio County Courthouse, it begins at noon Friday with food and business vendors at the courthouse lawn.
The highlight again will be the annual Parade at 10 Saturday morning through downtown Marfa.
Grand Marshall this year will be Jo Ann Rodriguez Bentancourt, chair of the Jumano Nation, Lipan Apache and Mescalero Apache.
Saturday afternoon will see more live music that continues Sunday.
The Chamber is accepting applications for vendors and parade participants.

The Big Bend Gun & Knife Show will be this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, at the Pete P. Gallego Center at Sul Ross State University, hosted by the Alpine Lions Club.
It will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 to 4 on Sunday. Admission is five dollars per person. Active military and children 12 and younger get in free.
Those who donate used eyeglasses for the Lions program of glasses to the needy get a dollar off the admission price.
Two raffles are being offered, one for a 9-millimeter pistol and another for a thousand rounds of 9-millimeter ammunition.
The first to draw gets to choose between the two and the second takes the other.

The friends of the Post will host the Post Dance Saturday from 8 p.m. until midnight at the County Post Park in Marathon.
The dance will have music by Craig Carter and the Spur of the Moment band and will be free to the public with donations welcome.
Friends of the Post encourages attendees to bring their own beer and their own lawn chairs to enjoy the dance under the stars.
