Services will be this week for Isabel Ramirez of Alpine, who died Sunday at home surrounded by family. She was 100 years old.
She was born in Marathon on July 7, 1923, and married Luis Ramirez on November 23, 1952, in Marathon. They lived in Big Bend National Park for many years.
Preceded in death by a grandson, Isabel is survived by three children, seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
The Rosary will be at 7 Thursday in the Alpine Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
The Funeral Service and Mass will be at 10 Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Mission in Marathon with burial to follow at Marathon Cemetery.

Historic Alpine and Sul Ross Fine Arts and Communication are teaming up on a production to include a discussion aimed at exploring Alpine’s Hispanic community.
The Hispanic Heritage Symposium, sponsored by Visit Alpine, Texas, will be at 7 Friday next week at the Granada Theatre.
The symposium will feature a panel discussion between members of the Hispanic community in their twenties with senior members of Alpine’s Hispanic Community.
It is hoped the discussion will bridge the generation gap, allowing for a vibrant exchange of stories, experiences and insights that have shaped Alpine’s Hispanic community over the years.
Sul Ross Professor of Communications Bret Scott will moderate the discussion.
In addition to guiding Historic Alpine’s Ghost Tours, Scott’s career includes collaborating with clients such as Showtime, H.B.O., Apple Computer and more. He is the creative director for The Second City, which speaks to his storytelling ability and knack for creating impactful and engaging narratives.
The discussion will pay homage to the Centennial School in Alpine and acknowledge its historical significance and illustrate the progress to a more inclusive and equitable society.
And artist Ramon Deanda will unveil a limited-edition work of art specially created for this event that will be available for purchase at the symposium.

The Alpine Business Alliance has called a general membership meeting for 5:30 Wednesday evening at the Sunshine House.
President Jim Street said the membership has not met for some time while a Working Group discusses plans to restore some of the businesses and jobs lost from the Covid pandemic.
This week’s meeting is designed to bring the membership up to date on progress the group has made and seek input in finalizing an action plan.
He said a few other items also have been included to take care of the regular business of the association.

Alpine schools have been selected as a recipient of the 115-thousand-dollar Texas Reading Initiative for K-through-5 Literacy Coaching grant.
The grant is for developing literacy coaches who support the science of teaching reading, high- quality instructional materials implementation and a knowledge-building approach to learning.
This grant selection is another key part of the district’s strategy to help all Alpine Bucks read on or above grade level while fostering a lifelong love of reading.

El profesor de Comunicaciones de Sul Ross, Bret Scott, moderará la discusión. Además de guiar los Tours de fantasmas de Alpine Historico, la carrera de Scott incluye colaborar con clientes como Showtime, HBO, Apple Computer y más. La Alianza de negocios de Alpine ha convocado una reunión general de miembros para el miércoles a las 5:30 de la tarde en Sunshine House.

La subvención es para desarrollar entrenadores de alfabetización que apoyen la ciencia de la enseñanza de la lectura, la implementación de materiales educativos de alta calidad y un enfoque de aprendizaje que desarrolle el conocimiento.
Esta selección de subvenciones es otra parte clave de la estrategia del distrito para ayudar a todos los Alpine Bucks a leer a su nivel de grado o superior y al mismo tiempo fomentar el amor por la lectura para toda la vida.
