Starting October 1, the Department of Nursing at Sul Ross will start accepting applications for its spring 2026 cohort for the Bachelor of Science degree program next month.
In part, qualifying students must have been admitted to Sul Ross State and have successfully completed all core courses and prerequisites by the end of spring 2026.
The application cycle will remain open until Dec. 1.
Interviews will be held December 15 through the 18, and applicants will be notified if they’ve been accepted on December 19.
The application can be found online at www.sulross.edu.

This weekend at Front Street Books, author Michael S. Price will talk about his latest book – “Reptiles of the Trans-Pecos Texas.”
In an interview with KVLF, Price said the field guide is meant to serve as a quick reference to help people identify the 81 species of reptiles that can be found in the Trans-Pecos region.
PRICE1: “That’s quite of bit of biodiversity for such a land that we think to be arid, yet it hosts such a wide diversity of these reptiles.” (0:10)
As part of his presentation, Price said he’ll bring in “live specimens” – turtles, lizards and snakes.
PRICE2: I plan on bringing some very unique specimens, like the Gray-banded kingsnake and the Trans-Pecos rat snake that are really, really unique to the Trans-Pecos. You have people from all over the planet who come to the Trans-Pecos every summer to look for Gray-banded kingsnake –- not because it’s rare, it’s just rarely seen.” (0:18)

On Saturday morning, Keep Alpine Beautiful – along with the women’s basketball team at Sul Ross State University – is holding a community clean up.
The public is invited to help clean up trash along the western entrance of Alpine.
The groups meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday just behind DG Market at 105 N. 15th street.

Alpine ISD will hold a public meeting next week (MONDAY) to get input from the community on what improvements they would like to see to Manuel Payne Field at Kokernot Park.
The district and the city of Alpine are considering potential upgrades to the field to improve youth recreation facilities in Alpine.
According to Alpine ISD superintendent Michelle Rinehart, if improved, the district could return to using the field for its middle school and high school softball teams. And it could also become the home of future softball tournaments and other events for the city.
The public meeting takes place Monday, September 22 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Alpine High School Cafeteria.

Brewster County commissioners court meets next week – Tuesday, September 23.
The regular meeting starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Brewster County Courthouse at 201 W. Ave. E.

In the fall, Marathon Public Library will host a grand opening celebration for its new building.
The new space, which is already open to the public, has been an effort years in the making, and part of the new expansion includes a community room, areas for infants, children and teens, an outdoor garden and expanded stacks for the library’s collections.
Another part of the renovation will see the nearby adobe schoolhouse–the first-one built in Brewster County–restored into a history museum.
The grand opening celebration will be November 6.

El Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine (ISD) celebrará una reunión pública la próxima semana (LUNES) para conocer las opiniones de la comunidad sobre las mejoras que les gustaría ver en el Campo Manuel Payne del Parque Kokernot.
El distrito y la ciudad de Alpine están considerando posibles mejoras en el campo para mejorar las instalaciones recreativas juveniles.
Según la superintendente del ISD, Michelle Rinehart, si se realizan mejoras, el distrito podría volver a utilizar el campo para sus equipos de sóftbol de secundaria y preparatoria. Además, podría convertirse en la sede de futuros torneos de sóftbol y otros eventos de la ciudad.
La reunión pública se llevará a cabo el lunes 22 de septiembre de 7:00 p. m. a 8:00 p. m. en la cafetería de la escuela preparatoria Alpine.

La reunión ordinaria comienza a las 9:30 a. m. en el Palacio de Justicia del Condado de Brewster, ubicado en 201 W. Ave. E.

En otoño, la Biblioteca Pública de Marathon celebrará la gran inauguración de su nuevo edificio.
El nuevo espacio, que ya está abierto al público, ha sido un proyecto de años de trabajo, y parte de la ampliación incluye una sala comunitaria, áreas para bebés, niños y adolescentes, un jardín al aire libre y una mayor cantidad de estanterías para las colecciones de la biblioteca.
Otra parte de la renovación consistirá en la restauración de la escuela de adobe cercana, la primera construida en el Condado de Brewster, para convertirla en un museo de historia.
La gran inauguración tendrá lugar el 6 de noviembre.
