Word has been received of the death of longtime Alpine resident, William W. “Billy” Mitchell.
He passed away at Shannon Hospital in San Angelo on September 5, 2025 at the age of 86.
He was a retired, disabled Army veteran and an avid horseman involved in riding and training cutting horses.
He is survived by his partner Carol Lewis; four children – Luann Mitchell, Brenda Rinehart, Amber Jones, and Shawn Mitchell; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three brothers – Herman, Jr., Royce and Gary Mitchell.
A celebration of life will be announced at a future date.

Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross State University in Alpine is awarding more than $250,000 in scholarships – it’s the largest amount of scholarship money ever awarded to students affiliated with the institute.
That’s according to the research facility, which says more than two dozen Sul Ross students are set to receive the scholarship funding.
In a press release announcing the news, Dr. Louis Harveson, the director of the Borderlands Research Institute, said: “Thanks to fundraising efforts of the Borderlands Research Foundation, along with the generosity of many fine organizations and donors, we are seeing an unprecedented investment in our students—and ultimately in the future of conservation.”

Later this week, the Museum of the Big Bend hosts the 39th annual Trappings of Texas.
The event is the nation’s longest-running exhibit and sale dedicated to Western art and custom cowboy gear.
It opens Thursday, September 18 and will continue through the 20th with a lineup of events, from live demonstrations and parties to a live auction.
This year, the Museum is celebrating the work of watercolorist Tim Oliver as the 2025 Trappings of Texas premier artist.
The exhibit will remain on display through November 1.

The 48th annual Cycle Fest kicks off this weekend at the historic Prude Ranch in Fort Davis.
The event is a scenic bike tour that takes cyclists through the Davis Mountains on both easy courses and challenging hills.
The tour provides three different routes at 34, 54 and 73 miles long.
The race is Saturday, September 21.

Next month, after a 30-year hiatus, the Moon & Tunes music festival returns to Fort Davis.
The lineup for the festival’s comeback includes William Beckmann and Jason Boland, among others.
The festival takes place October 3 and 4 at the High Frontier.

El Instituto de Investigación de Borderlands de la Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross en Alpine otorga más de $250,000 en becas, la mayor cantidad jamás otorgada a estudiantes afiliados al instituto.
Esto según el centro de investigación, que afirma que más de dos docenas de estudiantes de Sul Ross recibirán las becas.

El 48.º Festival Ciclista anual arranca este fin de semana en el histórico Prude Ranch en Fort Davis.
El evento es un recorrido panorámico en bicicleta que lleva a los ciclistas a través de las montañas Davis, tanto por rutas fáciles como por cuestas desafiantes.
El recorrido ofrece tres rutas diferentes de 55, 87 y 117 kilómetros de longitud.
