September 15th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Thursday, September 15th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

The suspension of Amtrak service through Alpine may quickly be restored after unions and management reached a tentative deal early Thursday on a threatened freight railroad strike.

Amtrak had canceled several routes including between San Antonio and Los Angeles through Alpine and one or two trains may still be affected.

But it issued a statement Thursday that it is working to quickly restore canceled trains and reaching out to impacted customers to accommodate them on the first available departures.

Visit Amtrak.com/alerts for the latest updates.

The Autumnal Equinox will happen at 8:04 this evening, the official start of fall and the time of year when days and nights are of equal length.

The astronomical events signal the start of one of the four seasons of the year. The Fall Equinox is when the sun is generally over the equator.

It travels further north in summer and the days are warmer and further south in the winter and days are colder. It’s the other way around south of the equator.

Some say the world “wobbles,” putting north or south closer to the sun.

What really happens is that the axis is slightly tilted so as it goes around the sun, one side or the other is closer to the sun.

So it soon will be officially fall with milder temperatures.

Alpine Community Projects will host a potluck supper and social next week at Baines Park at Gallego and 5th Street.

The new Alpine non-profit civic club designed the event for people to visit with neighbors but it also is designed for you to tell your thoughts about Alpine’s needs and wants.

The A.C.P. will bring the plates, napkins and silverware. Guests should bring a dish to share, something to sit on and a drink.

The fellowship will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, September 24.

Friday is September 16, or dies y seis to our friends across the Rio Grande. It’s the celebration of Mexican Independence, their Fourth of July.

No, it’s not Cinco de Mayo. That marks the day in 1862 that the Mexicans defeated the French in the battle of Puebla east of Mexico City.

Dies y Seis marks the day in 1810 when a brave priest in the village of Dolores rang his church bell and delivered a powerful speech that set off the War of Independence from Spain.

The Big Bend Conservation Alliance is partnering with Marfa Public Library to bring Far West Texas Bird Care Packages to local libraries and some schools.

Each care pack has tips for the fall migration season and include Cosmos seed for planting, which will help the birds when they migrate back through the area in spring.

Far West Texas Care Packages will be in libraries in Alpine, Fort Davis, Presidio, Marathon, Marfa and schools in Terlingua and Valentine.

To help birds even more, citizens can participate in Lights Out Texas by turning off all non-essential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during peak migration September through October.

Most migratory birds fly at night and bright lights of commercial and residential buildings attract and disorient them, causing collisions and leaving birds vulnerable.

As hunting season approaches the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office is reminding citizens to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity.

The Sheriff’s department will conduct extra patrols in remote areas, including Terlingua Ranch, to help enforce private property laws.

The majority of the land outside of State and National Park boundaries is private and is only accessible with permission from the landowner.

To report trespassing, poaching or other suspicious activity, contact the Sheriff’s department at 837-3488 or dial 911 for emergencies.

Alpine Independent School District will host the second pastries with parents Friday for parents of first and second graders at 7:15 in the morning.

Parents will sign in at the front office and receive a pink tag which they must wear while they enjoy breakfast and visit.

For more details, visit the Alpine I.S.D. Facebook page.

I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez and this has been your local and area news report for KVLF 98.7 FM, 1240 AM and KALP 92.7 FM brought to you by your Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Have a great evening everybody.
