A habitat enhancement project six years in the making is coming to fruition on the 22,000 acre Decie Ranch between Alpine and Marathon.
Ranch Manager Wiley Dabbs has had vital support from landowners and several organizations that create, fund and implement plans specific to this property.
They include Borderlands Research Institute, Natural Resources Conservation Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Texas Parks and Wildlife.
Decie Ranch has a variety of terrain from wooded mountain slopes to desert valley flats. But much of it is covered in a thick mono-culture of creosote bush that doesn’t slow down surface water flow as well as the grass communities that formerly dominated the area. The ranch has 12 miles of pronghorn-friendly fence which has the bottom wire set at least 18 inches off the ground, to allow pronghorn to slip under it on their frequent movements. The result of all of these and other management tactics offer improved habitat for wildlife.
The land stewardship center at B.R.I. offers a variety of programs to help carry the financial burden of implementing new land management techniques to aid in conservation.

The annual fall festival by Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church will be this weekend with a special memorial 5-K Run on Sunday morning honoring the late Coach Rick Keith.
Saturday’s schedule begins with an anticipated mass titled “United in Faith” at 4 to kick off the weekend.
The music, food booths and festivities begin with the Destino Band from 6 to 8 and Grupo Vital from Houston from 8 to midnight.
Sunday morning activities will begin with the Rick Keith Memorial run at 8 and the Bingo Session begins at 11. Entertainment and games along with music will be from 1 to 6.
Matachines Santa Teresa will play at 1, Un Charro y Una Dama at 2, the Fort Davis Ballet Folklorico y Las Adelitas at 3 and Grupo Zauna from Presidio from 4 to 6.
It ends with the raffle from 6 to 7 with prizes including gift cards and the first prize also receives a Last Supper Painting. All festivities for the weekend are free of charge.
And Keith also will be honored at the screening of films by Charles Bell and Dave Cadriel whom he inspired and then portrayed the German minimal artist Karla Glocke.
The films feature cameo roles by numerous residents of the Big Bend area.
The screening will be at 7 Thursday next week at the Granada. Doors open at 6:30 and admission is free. The films are appropriate for ages 16 and above.
The Big Bend Arts Council has announced that retired Sul Ross Arts Professor Carol Fairlie has been named Coordinator of Exhibits to assist curators in the planning and exhibits of shows.
The council is reviewing the 2024 Show Calendar, assigning show themes, curators and inventory workers.
The council meeting is at 2 Sunday at the Food Pantry Building at 933 East Gallego Avenue.
Artists interested in having a specially-themed show or would like to learn to curate an already established show as a co-curator, should attend the meeting.
The Council will host two gallery receptions at 5 and 5:30 Friday.
The first will be at Catch Light for Sharon Haney and her Pastel Paintings and the next 30 minutes later will be for the Black and White show at Gallery on The Square.

Un proyecto de mejora del hábitat que lleva seis años de desarrollo está llegando a buen término en el proyecto de 22 mil hectareas del Rancho Decie entre Alpine y Marathon.
El administrador del rancho, Wiley Dabbs, ha contado con el apoyo vital de los propietarios de tierras y de varias organizaciones. que crean, financian e implementan planes específicos para esta propiedad. Incluyen el Instituto de Investigación Borderlands, el Servicio de Conservación de Recursos Naturales, el Servicio de Pesca de Estados Unidos y Servicio de Vida Silvestre, Fundación Nacional de Pesca y Vida Silvestre y Parques y Vida Silvestre de Texas.
Rancho Decie tiene una variedad de terrenos, desde laderas boscosas de montañas hasta llanuras de valles desérticas.
Pero gran parte está cubierta por un espeso monocultivo de arbusto de creosota que no disminuye el flujo de agua superficial, así como las comunidades de pastos que antiguamente dominaban el área.
El rancho tiene 12 millas de cerca apta para berrendos cuyo alambre inferior está colocado al menos a 46 centímetros del suelo, para permitir que los berrendos se deslicen debajo de él en sus movimientos frecuentes.
El resultado de todas estas y otras tácticas de gestión ofrece un hábitat mejorado para la vida silvestre.

El festival anual de otoño de la Iglesia Católica Nuestra Señora de la Paz será este fin de semana con una Carrera conmemorativa especial de 5 km que se llevara el domingo por la mañana en honor al fallecido entrenador Rick Keith.
El programa del sábado comienza con una misa anticipada titulada “Unidos en la fe” a las 4 para dar inicio al fin de semana. Comienzan la música, casetas de comida y festejos con la Banda Destino del 6 al 8 y Grupo Vital desde Houston de 8 a medianoche.
Las actividades del domingo por la mañana comenzarán con la carrera Rick Keith Memorial a las 8 y la sesión de Bingo comienza a las 11. La animación y juegos junto con música serán de 1 a 6. Matachines Santa Teresa empiezan a la 1, Un Charro y Una Dama a las 2, el Ballet Folklorico de Fort Davis y Las Adelitas a las 3 y el Grupo Zauna de Presidio de 4 a 6. Finaliza con el sorteo del 6 al 7 con premios que incluyen tarjetas regalo y el primer premio también recibe un cuadro de la última cena.
