Good evening, today is Tuesday, September 13th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Amtrak announced Tuesday it will pre-emptively cancel trips over some seven Long-Distance routes, including one though Alpine, to avoid possible passenger disruptions while enroute.
The action came as a result of the threatened strike starting Friday by railroad workers.
In a statement Tuesday, Amtrak said it is closely monitoring the ongoing freight rail labor contract negotiations.
These negotiations do not involve Amtrak or the Amtrak workforce and the passenger rail service but it is hopeful that the parties will reach a resolution.
A general rail interruption could significantly impact intercity passenger rail service because Amtrak operates most of its route miles on tracks owned and operated by freight-rail lines.
The statement said Amtrak will only operate trains this week that it can ensure will have enough time to reach their final destinations by strike deadline of 12:01 a.m. Friday.
Included in the suspensions starting Tuesday is the Texas Eagle between San Antonio and Los Angeles through Alpine.
There was no word on when, or even if, the service through Alpine will resume.
The Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce will host a meet and greet from 4 to 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Kelly Pavilion behind the chamber office.
The chamber is looking forward to recognizing businesses and members, introducing new chamber staff and board members and rolling out the new 2023 membership.
Deputy Director of Membership Pam Knapen said the meet and greet will give a better perspective of what the chamber does and their goals.
Kinapen: “Sometimes it’s easier to come see what we’re doing in our office and make you feel welcome rather than us just being welcome out in the community. We want you to come and feel like you’re in our home.”
Knapen said the meet and greet is also a way for the chamber to share the passion they have for the local businesses.
Kinapen: “We’ve been there and we enjoy it. We can really truly say with a passion ‘Oh my gosh you’ve got to check out – here’s a great store, here’s a wonderful place to stay, go have a hike, look at the stars.”
Chamber members, local businesses and non-profits and interested individuals are welcome for some light snacks and drinks with wine from Chateau Wright.
The Sul Ross State University Theatre Program will celebrate its 101st season with Sarah Ruhl’s “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” next month.
The show opens Friday, October 14, at the Studio Theatre in the Francois Fine Arts Building on the Alpine campus.
In the plot, the heroin Jean unexpectedly discovers a cell phone owned by a mysterious stranger and is taken on an adventure, meeting the eclectic people surrounding his life.
Director Bret Scott said Sarah Ruhl offers an intricate and offbeat play about the ways modern technology connects and disconnects people.
She is an amazing playwright, he said. She has created a play that’s filled with laughter, meaning and a whole lot of thought.
Everyone is connected by cell phones today and ‘Dead Man’s Cell Phone’ asks if maybe these devices also are disconnecting us.
Premiering at Washington D.C.’s Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in 2007, the play opened Off-Broadway the following year, earning seven Helen Hayes Award nominations.
The Sul Ross Program’s production runs weekends October 14 to 30 in the Studio Theatre.
Performances on Fridays and Saturdays start at 7:30 p.m. and on Sundays at 2 p.m.
Tickets are 15 dollars for general admission, 10 for children 12 and under and seniors 65 and older and free for veterans and active military.

Amtrak anunció el martes que cancelará de forma preventiva los viajes en unas siete rutas de larga distancia, incluida una a través de Alpine, para evitar posibles interrupciones de los pasajeros en el camino.
