Elizabeth Granado Pineda, of San Angelo, passed away on August 22.
She was born in 1958 in Marfa, where she attended St. Mary’s. Elizabeth graduated from Odessa High School, and obtained her medical assistant’s certification in El Paso and worked for a period of time there.
She eventually moved back to the Big Bend, settling in Alpine, where she graduated from Sul Ross State University in 1990.
She worked all around the Big Bend from the Big Bend Regional Medical Center in Alpine, to the rural clinics in Marfa and Presidio. Elizabeth’s career expanded to working at hospitals in Odessa and Midland and nursing homes before moving and working in San Angelo – her last years of her life.
Elizabeth’s kind and gentle heart, along with her laughter, will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her mother, her three siblings, along with 11 nieces, 6 nephews and extended family and friends who loved her dearly.
Elizabeth will be celebrated on October 4 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fort Davis.
A rosary service will be held at 9:30 a.m. and mass will follow at 10. Elizabeth’s ashes will be laid to rest at St. Joseph’s cemetery.

The city of Alpine will hold its next monthly bulk pick up the first full week of October.
You can get rid of large items like furniture, mattresses, appliances and yard waste – but must schedule the pickup.
Residents will have between September 29 and Friday October 3 to schedule their pickup for the following week.

There’s a new history exhibit at the Jeff Davis County Library in Fort Davis.
“In His Own Words: The Life and Work of César Chávez” documents Chávez’s career that saw him pave the way for better working conditions for American farm workers.
The 22 images featured in the exhibit are from original vintage photos.
The exhibit is free of charge, and will be open through Friday, October 10.

The Big Bend Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas is now taking applicants for the Patricia Manning undergraduate scholarship awards.
The Patricia Rose Manning scholarship was established last year to honor Patty Manning, a long time grower of native plants in the Big Bend.
Two scholars will be awarded – one $3,000 dollar scholarship and one $4,000 dollar scholarship.
Among the application requirements: you must be a junior or senior in the fall 2025, studying full time at Sul Ross State University.
The submission deadline is October 31. The award date is November 15.

Later this month, celebrate National Public Lands day by cleaning up the most iconic pockets of Big Bend Ranch State Park.
On Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to noon, head to the park as staff and volunteers clean up a portion of River Road and some of the most popular trails in the park.

Elizabeth Granado Pineda, de San Angelo, falleció en agosto
Nació en 1958 en Marfa, donde asistió a St. Mary’s. Elizabeth se graduó de la preparatoria Odessa y obtuvo su certificación de asistente médica en El Paso, donde trabajó durante un tiempo.
Finalmente regresó a Big Bend y se estableció en Alpine, donde se graduó de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross en 1990.
Trabajó por todo Big Bend, desde el Centro Médico Regional Big Bend en Alpine hasta las clínicas rurales de Marfa y Presidio. Su carrera se expandió y trabajó en hospitales de Odessa y Midland, así como en residencias de ancianos, antes de mudarse y trabajar en San Angelo, sus últimos años de vida.
El corazón bondadoso y gentil de Elizabeth, junto con su risa, se extrañarán profundamente.
Le sobreviven su madre, sus tres hermanos, junto con 11 sobrinas, 6 sobrinos y familiares y amigos que la amaban profundamente.
El 4 de octubre se celebrará el funeral de Elizabeth en la Iglesia Católica de San José en Fort Davis.
Se rezará el rosario a las 9:30 a. m. y se celebrará una misa a las 10:00 a. m. Las cenizas de Elizabeth serán enterradas en el cementerio de San José.

La ciudad de Alpine llevará a cabo su próxima recolección masiva mensual la primera semana completa de octubre.
Puede deshacerse de artículos grandes como muebles, colchones, electrodomésticos y desechos de jardín, pero debe programar la recolección.
Los residentes tendrán entre el 29 de septiembre y el viernes 3 de octubre para programar su recolecta para la semana siguiente.

Hay una nueva exhibición de historia en la Biblioteca del Condado Jeff Davis en Fort Davis.
“En sus propias palabras: La vida y obra de César Chávez” documenta la carrera de Chávez, que lo vio allanar el camino para mejores condiciones laborales para los trabajadores agrícolas estadounidenses.
Las 22 imágenes que aparecen en la exposición son fotografías originales de época.

El Capítulo Big Bend de la Sociedad de Plantas Nativas de Texas ahora está aceptando solicitantes para las becas de pregrado Patricia Manning.
La beca Patricia Rose Manning se estableció el año pasado para honrar a Patty Manning, una cultivadora de plantas nativas en Big Bend desde hace mucho tiempo.
Se premiarán dos becas: una de $3,000 dólares y otra de $4,000 dólares.
