Betty Louise Alex, who called south Brewster County home, died in August after an extended illness. She was 76.
As a young single mother, Betty put herself through college and did her graduate studies in wildlife biology at Corpus Christi State University. She worked for the U.S. Geological Survey for several years on offshore cruises collecting sediment samples from the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. In 1980, she applied to the National Park Service and began a new career at Big Bend National Park as the ranger activities clerk.
In the late 1980s, Betty took on the position of Geographic Information Systems specialist which enabled her to get back into science. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, she built the GIS program at Big Bend from the ground up. During Betty’s last few years with the National Park Service, she oversaw a project to document rare plant species. When she started this project, there were 36 plant species that were considered rare, threatened or at least uncommon in the national park. Four years later, that list had grown to over 300 species. Her photographic documentation of plants and their habitats grew to over 18,000 photos.
Betty dedicated her life to the pursuit of natural history, wildlife biology, botany, and an intense connection with the Chihuahuan Desert.
She leaves behind her husband, Thomas C. Alex; and his son; her son; and four grandchildren. She also leaves behind several precious kitties.
A Celebration of Betty’s Life is scheduled for Saturday, November 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the community center in Study Butte.

We’re just about two months away from the November election and two candidates are vying to join city council and represent Ward 5.
Current Ward 5 councilmember Rick Stephens has decided not to run – and two political newcomers have entered the race: Rozolen Stanford and Isaiah Olayinka.
Rozolen moved to Alpine almost 10 years ago and lives here with her husband and children. She’s worked for the Presbyterian Church, got her Master’s Degree from Union Seminary, worked three factory jobs in her youth and has most recently been working with the Tierra Grande Texas Master Naturalist Chapter.
Rozolen spoke about her work experience on KVLF’s “Ward 5 Perspective.”
STANDFORD1: “And I can tell you that these jobs have informed every other job I’ve ever had. They gave me the life skills, the work experience, the social interaction, the memory work, getting results in teams, and project management, and a perpetual scanning of the workflow.” (0:22)
For Rozolen, issues of quality of life are the most pressing and what she would focus on if elected.
STANFORD2: “And I truly, truly want to represent my neighbors and everyone else lucky enough to live in Alpine. I think the most important issues right now that are facing Alpine are water security and aging infrastructure. And those two things really affect the quality of life in Alpine.” (0:20)
Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 3 and early voting will be from October 19 to October 30. You can check your voter registration status at votetexas.gov.
The last day to register to vote is October 5.

Over the weekend, the Alpine Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation will host its third annual banquet and fundraiser – there will be games, raffles and a live auction.
The event is tomorrow (SATURDAY) at the Alpine Civic Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

On Monday, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host another West Texas meeting on the New World screwworm.
In a continued effort to teach about the threat the parasitic fly poses, the service will host a meeting on Monday, Sept. 14 in El Paso to inform residents about what to look for, how to report potential infestations and how to maintain external parasite control on livestock and pets.
The event will be held from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at El Paso.

Next week, the Museum of the Big Bend will host the 40th Annual Trappings of Texas, the nation’s longest-running exhibit and sale dedicated to Western art and custom cowboy gear.
The event kicks off with an opening reception on Thursday, Sept. 17 and will run through Saturday, Sept. 19.

Para Rozolen, los temas relacionados con la calidad de vida son los más urgentes y en ellos se centraría si resultara elegida.

El lunes, el Servicio de Extensión AgriLife de Texas A&M organizará otra reunión en el oeste de Texas sobre el gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo.
Como parte de sus esfuerzos continuos para educar sobre la amenaza que representa esta mosca parásita, el servicio celebrará una reunión el lunes 14 de septiembre en El Paso. El objetivo es informar a los residentes sobre qué señales buscar, cómo reportar posibles infestaciones y cómo mantener el control de parásitos externos en el ganado y las mascotas.
El evento se llevará a cabo de 5:30 p. m. a 8:00 p. m. en el Centro de Investigación y Extensión AgriLife de Texas A&M en El Paso.
