Katy Padilla Stout, the Democratic candidate for Congressional District 23, has been touring the Big Bend this week – meeting with voters and campaigning to represent the sprawling congressional district
In an interview with KVLF, Padilla Stout said she doesn’t have a history in politics but felt compelled to run.
KPS1: “I think the one silver lining to where we are as a country is the fact that there are normal, everyday people up and down this ballot – on both sides of the aisles – because we recognize that we have to do something different.” (0:12)
Congressional District 23 has been without a representative since the Spring when a scandal forced former Rep. Tony Gonzales to drop out of his re-election bid. The Republican candidate in the race is Republican Brandon Herrera, a gun rights activist.
When it comes to the Trump administration’s border security infrastructure plans in the Big Bend, Padilla Stout says barriers aren’t necessary in the region.
KPS2: “I am for no bulldozers, no wall, no work, no anything – hard pass on that.” (0:07)
Congressional District 23 has typically leaned Republican – and has been held by the GOP since 2015. Within the last several weeks, however, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee added the district to its target list – signalling the committee’s belief that they could flip the district.

On Monday, Brewster County officials held a special commissioners court, where they approved the “final costs” for the purchase of nearly 10 acres in Study Butte.
The county acquired the land for roughly $86,000.
Commissioner Ruben Ortega was leading the discussion and vote with the County Judge out of town.
ORTEGA1: “And this is to be paid through tourism funds? Yes, sir. Correct. Good.” (0:06)
Before voting, the present commissioners discussed the item and expressed their hesitancy with the price, but felt more comfortable with the move since the funds were provided by tourism dollars.
