Norman Nunley, born on January 3, 1961, in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on October 5 in Alpine. He was 64.
Throughout his life, Norman displayed a remarkable work ethic and a diverse range of interests that enriched his journey. His professional journey led him to a role in sales for Morrison True Value and Jarratt’s Building Supply, where he connected with many in the community through his friendly demeanor.
He also worked river tours in Big Bend National Park, sharing his expansive knowledge of nature with visitors and instilling in them a sense of wonder for the landscapes around them.
In addition to his various jobs, Norman achieved his dream of owning a small family business, which he wholeheartedly devoted himself to, ensuring it became a cherished part of his family’s legacy.
He had a fascination for reptiles and amphibians and in his spare time, Norman found joy in gardening and cultivating his beloved tree orchard.
Norman was an adored husband to Donna Nunley, who stood by him through life’s ups and downs. He was a dedicated father, deeply loved by his three children.
As we remember Norman Nunley, we celebrate a life that was richly lived, filled with passion for nature, devotion to family, and an unwavering kindness that touched everyone around him. His gentle spirit, laughter, and love will forever remain in the hearts of all who were privileged to know him.

Today (WEDNESDAY), Blue Origin completed its 15th crewed flight.
To date, Blue Origin has flown 80 people some 62 miles above Earth’s surface, the distance considered to be the boundary where Earth ends and space begins.
The space tourism company says the flight – which took off from the company’s facility near Van Horn – is a “testament to the relentless spirit of exploration.”

After a lengthy city council meeting, officials last night (TUESDAY NIGHT) voted to offer the city manager position to Edgar Garcia.
The council made the unanimous vote after coming out of executive session where they discussed the position.

EAVES1: “Okay, city secretary, council voted unanimously to offer Edgar Garcia the city manager position with a salary of $120,000. And with that we will adjourn at 10:07 p.m.” (0:15)
The next Alpine City Council meeting is Oct. 21.

Tomorrow (THURSDAY), the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will host a guest lecture on desert toads, and frogs.
Dr. Kerry Griffis-Kyle, a professor at Texas Tech, will lead the discussion and will also talk about biodiversity and conservation in arid and semi-arid regions.
Her presentation is called “Let’s Talk Toad: Sex, Water, and Bad Decisions.” It will be held tomorrow (THURSDAY) at the Crowley theater in Marfa, starting at 7:00 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public.

The College of Education at Sul Ross State University has appointed Shelly Landreth as the school’s associate professor and chair of education.
Landreth is joining Sul Ross from the University of Texas Permian Basin, where she served as an associate professor and chair of teacher preparation in that university’s college of education.
According to a press release from the school, Landreth’s experience also includes 23 years in Texas public schools, where she worked primarily in rural districts, taught English language arts and reading, served as a librarian, and worked as a district-level curriculum director.
Landreth said she’s thrilled to join Sul Ross and values the school’s “mission to provide high-quality, accessible education.”
She starts in the role on Oct. 15.

Next weekend, the Big Bend Open Road Race will see drivers from across the state and beyond race down Highway 285 south, between Fort Stockton and Sanderson.
Organizers say the open-road race is the “most challenging” in the world.
The Texas Department of Transportation has closed the road for the event – from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A lo largo de su vida, Norman demostró una notable ética de trabajo y una amplia gama de intereses que enriquecieron su trayectoria. Hoy (MIÉRCOLES), Blue Origin completó su decimoquinto vuelo tripulado.

Mañana (JUEVES), el Instituto de Investigación del Desierto Chihuahuense ofrecerá una conferencia magistral sobre sapos y ranas del desierto.
La Dra. Kerry Griffis-Kyle, profesora de Texas Tech, dirigirá el debate y también hablará sobre la biodiversidad y la conservación en regiones áridas y semiáridas.
Su presentación se titula “Hablemos de Sapos: Sexo, Agua y Malas Decisiones”. Se llevará a cabo mañana (JUEVES) en el Teatro Crowley de Marfa, a partir de las 7:00.
El evento es gratuito y abierto al público.

La Facultad de Educación de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross ha nombrado a Shelly Landreth profesora asociada y directora de educación.
Landreth se incorpora a Sul Ross procedente de la Universidad de Texas en la Cuenca Pérmica, donde se desempeñó como profesora asociada y directora de formación docente en la facultad de educación de dicha universidad.
Según un comunicado de prensa de la escuela, Landreth también cuenta con 23 años de experiencia en escuelas públicas de Texas, donde trabajó principalmente en distritos rurales, impartió clases de lengua y literatura inglesa y lectura, fue bibliotecaria y directora curricular a nivel de distrito.
Landreth expresó su entusiasmo por unirse a Sul Ross y valora la misión de la escuela de brindar una educación accesible y de alta calidad.
Asumirá su cargo el 15 de octubre.
