The Second Annual Big Bend Bluegrass Festival will be this weekend with award-winning groups and individual performers.
It all kicks off on Thursday at the Ritchey Hotel, which will host the Hillbilly Fever Bluegrass Band starting at 8. Hillbilly Fever is described as a hard-driving traditional Bluegrass band made up of seasoned musicians with varied backgrounds and has performed from the East to the West coast.
Friday and Saturday shows will be at the Civic Center, featuring performers like The Kody Norris Show, The Baker Family and Riley Gilbreath and Lonestar Blue. It all ends Sunday back at the Ritchey with a noon brunch featuring the Edgar Loudermilk Band.

The Alpine Avalanche reports this week that overall enrollment is down slightly this year over last year at Sul Ross State University.
Enrollment is up on the Alpine campus this year but it is at its lowest since 2021 on the Rio Grande campus.
The total enrollment number for 2023 currently is 21 hundred 36 students with 14 hundred 76 at Alpine, down 20 from 2021 but up 102 from 2022. Sul Ross President Dr. Carlos Hernandez told the paper he is pleased with the direction of enrollment data overall. It reflects campus-wide efforts, he said, as well as the support of local and state partnerships dedicated to the growth and health of the college.
For those not registered to vote in Texas or whose registration has expired, the deadline to register is Tuesday.
The next election is November 7 with 14 proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution on the ballot.
They include propositions regarding farming and ranching rights, school district taxes and homestead exemptions, wealth tax, and more. Alpine High School Government Teacher Cynthia Cox is a volunteer deputy voter registrar for the county and is happy to assist. Reach her at ccox@alpineisd.net
Big Bend National Park is in two weeks of being closed to remove non-native aoudad using helicopters and staff trained in aerial shooting.
The audad, also known as Barbary sheep, are native to the dry mountains of northern Africa but now thrive in West Texas.
They occupy the same habitats as the park’s small population of native desert bighorn sheep and negatively impact the natural ecology of the park. The Deadhorse Mountains and surrounding areas, including the Dagger Flat Road and Old Ore Road, are closed for the remainder of the two weeks beginning Tuesday.
The Mesa de Anguila will be surveyed for bighorn sheep and aoudads Monday and there will be no lethal control of aoudad on the Mesa de Anguila on that day. But all other areas of the national park elsewhere will remain open on the survey date. The affected area is all east of the extension on Highway 385 from Persimmon Gap to Panther Junction and ending just north of Rio Grande Village.

Alpine Avalanche informa esta semana que la inscripción general ha disminuido ligeramente este año con respecto al año pasado en la Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross.
La inscripción ha aumentado en el campus de Alpine este año, pero está en su nivel más bajo desde 2021 en el campus de Rio Grande.
El número total de matrículas para 2023 actualmente es de 2136 estudiantes, de los cuales 1476 están en Alpine, 20 menos que en el 2021 pero 102 más que en el 2022.
El presidente de Sul Ross, el Dr. Carlos Hernández, dijo al periódico que está satisfecho con la dirección de los datos de inscripción en general.Refleja los esfuerzos de todo el campus, dijo, así como el apoyo de asociaciones locales y estatales dedicadas al crecimiento y la salud de la universidad.
