Good evening, today is Tuesday, October 4th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
A British citizen who was struck and seriously injured by an unidentified sports utility vehicle traveling through Alpine early in the morning of September 15 has died of his injuries.
Stephen Halsall was struck at the Highway 90 underpass while walking back to the Hampton Inn by himself.
Police told us Emergent Ambulance Service transported the patient to Big Bend Regional Medical Center and he was later transferred to University Medical Center in El Paso.
He died there ten days later with his wife by his side.
Alpine Police have asked the Texas Department of Public Safety to help with the investigation, including finding the offending vehicle.
Alpine Independent School District has earned a 70-thousand-dollar grant to help build a framework for high quality math instruction from the Texas Education Agency.
The district hopes to improve math teaching and learning in grades Kinder through sixth grade and significantly increase the number of students who are on or above grade level in math.
The grant also will be used to continue building teachers knowledge of grade level math standards through collaborative systems of support in working together.
The funds will allow our school district to bring in a nationally-renowned organization called the National Institute for Excellence and Teaching.
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart said during last week’s Buck Banter show that the N.I.E.T. will be a great resource for teachers and staff to achieve a high-quality math program.
Rinehart: “I’ve seen the work they’ve done in other communities in Texas and across the Nation, just an incredible group. They’re going to be providing onsite support for us, professional learning for our teachers and our staff, coaching, they’re going to be here every other week. We’re just really excited to be able to partner with them and a grant of this size frankly allows us to be able to afford to work with them and to bring them to us here in Alpine Texas which we’re so excited about.”
Finally, some of the grant funding will allow the district to provide stipends to the teachers for engaging in this work.
The Seventh Annual Wild West Night by the Sunshine House will be from 6 to 9 p.m. October 22 with food, music and events for the whole family.
A chuckwagon dinner will feature carne guisada with all the fixings and the Sunshine House will host a bake-off for adults and a youth section for 7-17-year-olds.
Attendees also will be able to bid in the silent auction, visit the photo booth or pick up a quilt.
Craig Carter and the Spur of the Moment Band will take the stage to perform classic country and western swing music.
The Chinati Foundation has announced two new officers, both with experience in the New York Art community.
Malinda Galindo, formerly of New York’s Museo del Barrio, is the new associate director of development and Stephen Moore is the new director of preservation and planning.
Moore has a background in design, capital construction and conservation and directed design and planning at the Four Freedoms Park in New York.
The foundation announced the two will guide critical operational areas as Chinati implements a multi-year Master plan.
Chinati Interim Director Marella Consolini said the two new officers are both creative thinkers and outstanding communicators.
The Big Bend Conservation Alliance and the Serious Starlight program is helping citizens comply with dark skies lighting by swapping lights for free.
The program is offered to residents with qualifying mercury vapor lights which will be switched for a compliant light for free.
Apart from the $150 value of the free lights, B.B.C.A. will offer a $50 gift card from Porter’s Grocery just for participating.
