Sul Ross State University has acquired nearly 50 acres of land in South Texas where the school intends to build a 4-year college.
According to the school, Sul Ross State University International will be built in Eagle Pass, and offer four-year degrees.
The university is purchasing the land for $4.5 million using funds provided by the lawmaker during the 89th Texas Legislature.
Sul Ross President, Carlos Hernandez called the move a “historic step forward for Sul Ross International,” and said the university will “serve and strengthen the Middle Rio Grande Region for generations to come.”

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marfa is hosting their annual Blessing of the Animals this weekend at the Presidio County courthouse.
The event is tomorrow (SATURDAY) from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.
In celebration of St. Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals, you’re invited to bring your pets to the courthouse lawn to be blessed for good health and well-being.
If your pet cannot attend in person, please bring a photo. You may also bring a favorite stuffed animal or photo of a pet who has passed on.
This event is free and open to the public.

At the next city council meeting, city leaders are set to discuss the vacancy for the city manager position and take action to hire someone for the role.
That’s according to an agenda for the meeting, which takes place Tuesday, October 7.
City council members are also set to discuss establishing a policy for the city funding nonprofit organizations.

Starting on Wednesday, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University in Alpine will host a few training sessions on improving your business.
The first training – increasing businesses effectiveness by branding – will teach you how to strategize, what tools to use, what factors to consider, and how to build your business by standing out from the competition. That’s from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm on Oct. 8.
The next one will be Friday, Oct. 10, from 10 to 11 a.m., and will focus on identifying stressors and setbacks in business and learning strategies to cope.

Next week, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will host a guest lecture on desert toads, and frogs.
Dr. Kerry Griffis-Kyle, a professor at Texas Tech, will lead the discussion and also talk about biodiversity and conservation in arid and semi-arid regions.
Her talk – “Let’s Talk Toad: Sex, Water, and Bad Decisions” – will be Thursday, October 9 at the Crowley theater in Marfa, starting at 7:00 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public.

Next month, Alpine Community Projects will host a community conversation on elder care in the region and how to provide for the Big Bend’s aging population.

La Iglesia Episcopal de San Pablo en Marfa celebra su Bendición Anual de los Animales este fin de semana en el juzgado del Condado de Presidio.
El evento es mañana (SÁBADO) de 10:00 a. m. a 12:00 p. m.
Para celebrar a San Francisco de Asís, el Santo Patrón de los Animales, los invitamos a traer a sus mascotas al jardín del juzgado para que sean bendecidas y gocen de buena salud y bienestar.
Si su mascota no puede asistir en persona, por favor, traiga una foto. También puede traer su peluche favorito o la foto de una mascota fallecida.
Este evento es gratuito y abierto al público.

En la próxima reunión del consejo municipal, los líderes municipales debatirán la vacante del puesto de administrador municipal y tomarán medidas para contratar a alguien para el puesto.
Esto se indica en la agenda de la reunión, que tendrá lugar el martes 7 de octubre.
Los miembros del consejo municipal también debatirán el establecimiento de una política para la financiación municipal de organizaciones sin fines de lucro.

A partir del miércoles, el Centro de Desarrollo de Pequeñas Empresas de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross en Alpine ofrecerá varias sesiones de capacitación sobre cómo mejorar su negocio.
La primera capacitación, “Incrementar la efectividad de su negocio mediante el desarrollo de marca”, le enseñará cómo crear estrategias, qué herramientas utilizar, qué factores considerar y cómo desarrollar su negocio destacándose de la competencia. El horario será de 2:30 a 3:30 el 8 de octubre.
La siguiente capacitación será el viernes 10 de octubre, de 10:00 a 11:00, y se centrará en identificar factores estresantes y contratiempos en los negocios y en aprender estrategias para afrontarlos.

La próxima semana, el Instituto de Investigación del Desierto Chihuahuense ofrecerá una conferencia sobre sapos y ranas del desierto.
La Dra. Kerry Griffis-Kyle, profesora de Texas Tech, dirigirá el debate y también hablará sobre la biodiversidad y la conservación en regiones áridas y semiáridas.
Su charla, “Hablemos de Sapos: Sexo, Agua y Malas Decisiones”, se llevará a cabo el jueves 9 de octubre en el Teatro Crowley de Marfa, a partir de las 7:00. El evento es gratuito y abierto al público.
