October 28th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Friday, October 28th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

The Center for Big Bend Studies will have its 28th Annual Conference next month in the University Center on the Sul Ross State University campus in Alpine.

The event November 11 and 12 will feature a social hour, silent auction and more than 30 presentations about the deep human history and culture of the Big Bend region.

The Keynote Speaker Saturday evening will be Author C. J. Alvarez, whose forthcoming book is a history of the Chihuahuan Desert.

For more information, call 837-8179 or visit cbbs.sulross.edu.

The Magical Warehouse at 113 E. Holland next to the Rangra Theater will host is very first Haunted House at the Granada Theatre Saturday until Halloween from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Magical Warehouse owner Connie Santillan said she was able to make her vision come true this year with the help of the Sul Ross Theatre Department and Bullshirtz.

Santillan: “Anything I think that scares me is what I put into the haunted house. So it’s anything that you think is scary but also confusing, is what I went for in designing the haunted house.”

Anyone 10 and under should probably go with an adult, but Santillan said any age should be able to enjoy it with the two scare levels available.

Santillan: “And when I mean two scare levels, it doesn’t mean one’s nicer than the other. It just means, I guess so I don’t give too much away, it means the first scare level might not have as many … entities. Let’s use that word. As maybe the higher scare level.”

Tickets are 15 dollars for adults and 10 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available at the Magical Warehouse, at the Haunted House or Granada Theatre.

Tickets are available at Eventbrite, at the store, or at the door. See granadatheatre.events.

And Alpine Police suggests people have fun on Halloween but observe some cautions to keep everyone safe.

The say do not use golf carts, A.T.V.s or side-by-sides and do not go to houses with the lights turned off. The Police Facebook suggests tongue in cheek that their candy is probably old.

And drivers, be especially alert for trick-or-treaters.

The Hillside Baptist Church again offers its annual Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box drive for needy children around the world.

People can get any regular sized shoe box with school supplies, toys and hygiene items and to be sent around the world.

Hillside Church has been the collection point for the tri-county area for five years but has been collecting shoe boxes since 2008.

This is an international initiative. Since 1993 more than 198 million children have received a shoebox in more than 170 countries.

Last year, more than 10.5 million shoe box gifts were donated and 9.1 million of those boxes came from the U.S.

Karen McGuire of Hillside Church said the community is what allows the church to send the 50 to 150 boxes a year.

McGuire: “You know we can shop here at home and go find special things for these boxes and then they wrap them or tag them for a child whether 5 to 7, 9 to 11, and 12 to 14, then they bring them up to Hillside and we send them to Odessa.”

Boxes can be brought to Hillside Church after November 14 but they should be ready to go. The church will not pack boxes for you.

They cannot send anything liquid, fragile, any hard candy, food, vitamins, anything with batteries in it, toy guns or army-themed toys.

For hours to bring items and more information call Karen at 386-3071.

I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez and this has been your local and area news report for KVLF 98.7 FM, 1240 AM and KALP 92.7 FM brought to you by your Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Have a great evening everybody.
