After college, she was an elementary teacher for Fort Stockton schools and later served as bookkeeper and office manager for Hargus Aviation.

She also owned and managed cattle ranches until her death.

Betty had a passion for Texas history, specifically Brewster and Pecos Counties, and was a lifetime member of the West Texas Historical Association and the Texas Historical Commission.

She won an Outstanding Service Award from the T.H.C. and served on the Pecos County Historical Association where she won a Distinguished Service Award

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and a son. Besides brother Ike, survivors are a daughter, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

The family has requested memorials made to First Presbyterian Church, Marathon Cemetery Association, West Texas Historical Association or a charity of choice.

Marathon again has a health clinic after several years without one.

The Alpine Avalanche reported in its current edition that Marci Roberts has teamed up with The Marathon Foundation and Texas Tech Health Science Center to provide the service.

Roberts told us it will use the same building as the old clinic at 100 Southwest 1st Street, next to the Ritchey Brother’s Building, but it will not be open for walk-ins.

She said the clinic is a 501 C-3 non-profit organization specializing in telemedicine and information is available on its website at marathonhealthcenter.org.

Roberts, who spearheaded the effort to get the clinic, said it was a seven-year process that now will let Marathon citizens and others access Texas Tech physicians in Odessa remotely.

She said the space in the building also can be used for Yoga and Zumba classes and a meeting space for civic organization meetings and other events.

Dr. Bernie Cantes, executive vice president and provost at Sul Ross State University, has been named to a new program at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Cantes is one of only 30 selected across the U.S. for the association’s 2022 Academy for New Provosts.

It is designed for newly-appointed provosts to connect with their state university peers in an environment tailored to the specific challenges that a first-time provost is likely to face.

The Academy will include monthly virtual learning and networking sessions and an in-person gathering in Washington, D.C.

And Sul Ross is one of 158 universities and colleges around the world to be honored by Exercise is Medicine for its efforts to create a culture of wellness on campus.

Assistant Professor of Kinesiology and Human Performance Dr. Shanna Moody said the on-campus initiative is a monumental step in the right direction.

She said the recognition shows the university cares about the wellbeing of its members and has an important role in helping to improve the health of each person in the campus community.”

Interim President Dr. Carlos Hernandez will sign a proclamation to declare Sul Ross an E.I.M. campus during the Dia de Lobo Wellness Fair on Nov. 2.
