Betty Ruth Gibson Gaddis Yndo of Alpine has passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, in Austin, Texas. She was 96.
Betty came from Stanton, Texas, and went to Baylor University. After graduation, she established the initial health programs for six rural schools in and around Martin County.
She met her husband, Dr. Don Gaddis, while helping to provide aid when an awning in downtown Stanton collapsed during a parade. The encounter led to a long marriage and a move to Fort Davis, where they built the first hospital.
When later establishing a medical clinic in Alpine, Betty fell in love with the community, hiked every mountain she could get permission to (and probably a few others), and became very active in local affairs.
After the death of her husband, she decided to “never retire, just to change hats about every 10 years”. In the years that followed, she moved from Austin – where she worked in design – then back to Alpine, where she started a construction company. Then, she decided to put on a different hat, move to Breckenridge, Colorado, and learn to cross-country ski, just for the halibut.
Then, she fell in love with, and married Lt. Col. Michael Yndo, and moved to the San Antonio area.
She could not ignore her love for Alpine though. For her, this took the form of promoting renovations and repairs along historic Murphy Street, Alpine’s first downtown.
A memorial celebration and dance will be coming at a time yet to be determined in Alpine. Details will be announced.
As per her long request, her tombstone shall read:
“Betty Ruth Gibson Gaddis Yndo, You can leave a message but I’m not here.”

At the Alpine city council last night (TUESDAY), city council members discussed the status of the city’s pool.
According to an inspection report performed in August, the pool has a total of 14 leaks – the majority are related to structural cracks.
Council Member Rick Stephens:
STEPHENS1: “You’re in the discovery phase. We know we have a leak, we know how much we’re losing. But we don’t know the extent or what the repair is.” (0:10)
The city is evaluating their next steps and repairing the pool ahead of the 2026 season.
During last night’s (TUESDAY NIGHT’S) meeting, city officials also provided two personnel updates. In the first update, Police Chief Darrell Losoya announced that he will be resigning from his position in January. Losoya addressed the council and said it’s been a “great ride,” and that he’s stepping down to work with Texas Municipal Police Association, and will be able to stay in Alpine.
In another update, Mayor Catherine Eaves said the person the city offered the city manager position to – Edgar Garcia – has redrawn his application for consideration.
EAVES1: “He said that due to circumstances beyond his control, and beyond our control, he’s had to pivot – is the word he used – his job search.” (0:12)
The mayor said the city has reached out to Garcia for more information, but has yet to hear back from him.

This weekend, the 22nd annual Marathon 2 Marathon takes place, bringing runners from across the state and country together for a challenging run through the Chihuahuan desert.
This year’s event is a benefit for the Marathon Health Center and other charitable organizations in the area. The race starts halfway between Marathon and Fort Stockton on US Route 385, and there are several race options for runners, including a full or half marathon and 10K or 5K races.

Marathon Public Library has been awarded the 2025 Beacon Award for Rural Impact. The recognition celebrates the library’s dedication to serving its rural community through innovative programs and community-centered services.
As part of the award, the library will receive a $1,000 grant to support its ongoing programs and services.
The library’s director, Dara Cavness, said the award is a “tremendous honor and a meaningful validation of the work we do every day.”

During Artwalk weekend in November, Sul Ross State University will host a special guided hike on Hancock Hill.
On Saturday, Nov. 22, starting at 9 a.m., Matt Walter will lead a 1.8 mile moderately challenging hike across Hancock Hill which will provide photographers with the opportunity to view Alpine from above.

Betty Ruth Gibson Gaddis Yndo de Alpine falleció en paz, rodeada de familiares y amigos, en Austin, Texas. Tenía 96 años.
Betty vino de Stanton, Texas, y estudió en la Universidad de Baylor. Tras graduarse, estableció los programas de salud iniciales para seis escuelas rurales en el condado de Martin y sus alrededores.

Se celebrará una celebración conmemorativa y un baile en Alpine en una fecha aún por determinar. Se anunciarán los detalles próximamente.

Anoche (MARTES) en el Ayuntamiento de Alpine, los miembros del Ayuntamiento discutieron el estado de la piscina de la ciudad.
Según un informe de inspección realizado en agosto, la piscina tiene un total de 14 fugas, la mayoría están relacionadas con grietas estructurales.
El concejal Rick Stephens cito:
: “Están en la fase de descubrimiento. Sabemos que tenemos una fuga, sabemos cuánto estamos perdiendo. Pero desconocemos su alcance ni cómo repararla.”
La ciudad está evaluando sus próximos pasos y reparando la piscina antes de la temporada 2026.
Durante la reunión de anoche, los funcionarios municipales también brindaron dos actualizaciones de personal. En la primera, el jefe de policía Darrell Losoya anunció que renunciará a su cargo en enero. Este fin de semana se lleva a cabo la 22ª edición anual del Maratón 2, que reúne a corredores de todo el estado y el país para una desafiante carrera a través del desierto de Chihuahua.
El evento de este año beneficia al Centro de Salud de Marathon y a otras organizaciones benéficas de la zona. La carrera comienza a medio camino entre Marathon y Fort Stockton, en la Ruta 385 de EE. UU., y hay varias opciones para los corredores, incluyendo una maratón completa o una media maratón, así como carreras de 10 km o 5 km.

La biblioteca pública de Marathon ha recibido el premio Beacon 2025 por su impacto rural.El reconocimiento celebra la dedicación de la biblioteca al servicio de su comunidad rural a través de programas innovadores y servicios centrados en la comunidad.
Como parte del premio, la biblioteca recibirá una subvención de $1,000 para apoyar sus programas y servicios continuos.
La directora de la biblioteca, Dara Cavness, dijo que el premio es “un tremendo honor y una validación significativa del trabajo que hacemos todos los días”.
