Registration for the 31st annual Center for Big Bend Studies conference is now open.
The two-day event touches on history and archaeology.
This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Meradeth Snow, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Montana. Her research includes anthropological genetics with a speciality in ancient DNA. She’s hoping to use her DNA research to uncover connections between former residents of the Big Bend region and their counterparts at Paquimé (pronounced – pah-key-MEH) in Mexico.
Online registration for the conference is open until the end of the month (OCTOBER).
The event is November 7 and 8 at Sul Ross in Alpine.

This weekend, the Alpine Humane Society hosts their annual fundraising event, “Dia de los Quesos.”
The event will feature a taco bar, a cash bar, live music and a salsa and queso competition with prizes for the top recipes. The fundraiser will also feature a silent auction with items from restaurants across the region, jewelry and musical instruments too.
Speaking to KVLF, Mary Ann Vega said the event is
VEGA1: “We just want folks to come out. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Last year’s event was the most successful that we’ve ever had in the history of the organization.” (0:13)
Vega says the group raised nearly $10,000 last year. And that money helps the group subsidize the cost of pet care, from helping to cover the cost of spaying and neutering Alpine pets to helping with vaccines and stocking a pet food pantry.
The nonprofit is still accepting donations for the silent auction. If interested, contact the Alpine Humane Society at 432-837-2532.
The fundraiser is Saturday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Alpine Civic Center.

Next month, Alpine Community Projects will host a community conversation on elder care in the region and how to provide for the Big Bend’s aging population.
The meeting will be November 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the old schoolhouse, located at 205 E. Sul Ross Ave.

In November, an indigenous nonprofit will host a reburial ceremony in Presidio for seven people who once called the Presidio-Ojinaga area their home – it’s an area known as “La Junta”
Throughout the years, the remains of Indigenous people were taken by archaeologists and private collectors to be studied and held in institutions. In recent years, there has been an effort to repatriate those remains to their rightful resting place.
The historic event will be held Saturday, November 1, at 9:00 a.m. at the Cementerio del Barrio de los Lipanes in Presidio. A community reception will follow at the American Legion.

Next month (NOVEMBER), Big Bend Best presents the inaugural best ball golf scramble.
The group is looking for three-person scramble teams to compete in the tournament. Registration is $225 per team and includes dinner and two drink tickets. The top team will win a cash prize, and there will be prizes for the person who hits the longest drive and the person who gets closest to the hole.
The event is Nov. 21 at 10 a.m. at the Alpine Country Club.

El evento contará con una barra de tacos, una barra con pago en efectivo, música en vivo y un concurso de salsa y queso con premios para las mejores recetas. La recaudación de fondos también incluirá una subasta silenciosa con artículos de restaurantes de la región, joyas e instrumentos musicales.
En declaraciones a KVLF, Mary Ann Vega dijo que el evento es importante para la organización.

A lo largo de los años, arqueólogos y coleccionistas privados se han llevado restos de pueblos indígenas para estudiarlos y conservarlos en instituciones. En los últimos años, se ha trabajado para repatriarlos a su legítimo lugar de descanso.
El evento histórico se llevará a cabo el sábado 1 de noviembre a las 9:00 a. m. en el Cementerio del Barrio de los Lipanes en Presidio. Posteriormente, se ofrecerá una recepción comunitaria en la Legión Americana.

El próximo mes (NOVIEMBRE), Big Bend Best presenta el torneo inaugural de golf scramble con la mejor pelota.
El grupo busca equipos de scramble de tres personas para competir en el torneo. La inscripción cuesta $225 por equipo e incluye cena y dos bebidas. El mejor equipo ganará un premio en efectivo, y habrá premios para quien pegue el drive más largo y quien se acerque más al hoyo.
El evento será el 21 de noviembre a las 10 a. m. en Alpine Country Club.
