Good evening, today is Friday, October 21st, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Alpine Business Alliance hosted a business roundtable Thursday in a room at the Old Holland Hotel to share ideas on a possible downtown activity center.
Ty Muennink, the new executive director of Alpine Gallery Night, has leased space at the corner of Holland Avenue and 6th Street.
He envisions a common meeting place for non-profit organizations and discussions centered around business incubator spaces or innovator spaces.
Sul Ross Small Business Development Center Director Liz Peña said incubator spaces allow new businesses to be created and innovator spaces are for a free flow of ideas.
A.B.A. President Conley Rasor said the discussion brought forth ideas of building an area where businesses or non-profits can unite to solve common problems.
It could include office spaces, conference areas and even offer paid services such as accounting, design, web services, grant writing and more.
It was a wide-ranging discussion and there was general agreement the need is to next start working toward a vision plan and to begin focusing on specific goals and objectives.
Monday kicks off Red Ribbon week throughout the country and Alpine is joining with a week full of themed activities.
It all began in 1985 after the death of D.E.A. agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena during an undercover operation in Mexico.
The week has communities across the country wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America.
The Alpine Police Department will have a presentation at the Elementary school Monday, one at the Middle School Tuesday and at the High School Friday.
Police Chief Darrel Losoya said he’s been doing these red ribbon week presentations for nearly three decades, all to keep the community safe and drug free.
Losoya: “I know there are some teachers that were former students when I first started this and they remember me going to the schools. I was just talking to one of the teachers that remembered that and that’s pretty cool.”
All schools will also have a week of themed dress codes with all campuses starting Monday by wearing red and ending Friday with their Halloween costumes.
At the High School students will get to wear Pajamas Tuesday, wacky clothes Wednesday and nerdy clothes Thursday.
For the middle school, Tuesday is pajama day, Wednesday students will wear neon and Thursday they’ll wear sweatpants and sweatshirts.
At the Elementary school Tuesday, students will wear travel attire, Wednesday their favorite sports team and Thursday they’ll wear crazy socks.
Throughout the week, Losoya wanted families to remember the pledge that goes along with Red Ribbon Week:
Losoya: “I pledge to keep my dreams alive and be all that I can be. I pledge to help others and keep myself drug free.”
Travelers from across the state will get to see what Alpine is all about at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas Saturday.
Alpine Tourism Coordinator Heather Yadon is heading to Dallas this weekend for our “Destination Day” from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the fair east of downtown Dallas.
More than two million visitors were expected to the fair this year, one of America’s largest, longest and most historic state fairs, first opening in 1886.
It provides a unique venue for the promotion of heritage tourism as a vitally important Texas product.
Along with Yadon, volunteers help staff the Texas Heritage Travel booth in the historic Go Texan Pavilion, next to the State Fair Wine Garden and close to the Cotton Bowl.
And Alpine residents have been encouraged to come to attend the Fair on that day.
Tickets are available at bigtex.com/info/tickets, which will provide general admission and access to all Fair exhibits and free shows.

El Departamento de Policía de Alpine tendrá una presentación en la escuela primaria el lunes, una en la escuela intermedia el martes y en la escuela secundaria el viernes.
El jefe de policía Darrel Losoya dijo que ha estado haciendo estas presentaciones de la semana del listón rojo durante casi tres décadas, todo para mantener a la comunidad segura y libre de drogas.
Todas las escuelas también tendrán una semana de códigos de vestimenta temáticos con todos los campus comenzando el lunes vistiendo de rojo y terminando el viernes con sus disfraces de Halloween.
En la escuela secundaria, los estudiantes podrán usar pijamas el martes, ropa loca el miércoles y ropa nerd el jueves.
Para la escuela intermedia, el martes es el día de pijama, el miércoles los estudiantes usarán neón y los jueves usarán pantalones deportivos y sudaderas.
En la Escuela Primaria el martes, los estudiantes usarán atuendo de viaje, el miércoles su equipo deportivo favorito y el jueves usarán calcetines locos.
A lo largo de la semana, Losoya ha querido que las familias recordaran el compromiso que acompaña a la Semana del Listón Rojo:
“Me comprometo a mantener vivos mis sueños y ser todo lo que puedo ser. Me comprometo a ayudar a los demás y a mantenerme libre de drogas.”
Los viajeros de todo el estado podrán ver de qué se trata Alpine en la Feria Estatal de Texas en Dallas el sábado.
La coordinadora de turismo de Alpine, Heather Yadon, se dirige a Dallas este fin de semana para nuestro “Día de destino” de 10 a. m. a 6 p. m. en la feria al este del centro de Dallas.
Se esperaba que más de dos millones de visitantes asistieran a la feria este año, una de las ferias estatales más grandes, más largas e históricas de los Estados Unidos, que se inauguró por primera vez en 1886.
Proporciona un lugar único para la promoción del turismo patrimonial como un producto de Texas de vital importancia.
