Good evening, today is Wednesday, October 18th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Marathon 2 Marathon foot race, commonly known simply as M-two-M, will be this Saturday.
Marathon, with a population of 420, can see more than triple on race day, typically with more than 500 racers plus their support teams and spectators.
Since 2011, the M2M has contributed $121,000 into the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and other community organizations.
They include the Parent Teacher Organization, Public Library, Baptist Church, Marathon Schools and the Marathon Clinic.
Businesses also benefit from the activities that boast sales while the race is in town.
The course was moved a few years ago from starting at the Highway 90-67 interchange east of Alpine to Highway 385 from Spring Creek Ranch into the finish line in downtown Marathon.
The M2M is a Boston Marathon qualifying race.
The 46th Annual Eino Hella Memorial Turkey Shoot is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Big Bend Sportsman Club Shooting Range.
The Club will host the event, which benefits the Sul Ross Range and Wildlife Club.
Club president Callie Porter said the event helps people engage in the culture of safety and conservation of the trans-Pecos and beyond.
Porter: “Going out there, especially if you’re bringing youth, is such a great experience because you’re learning gun safety and you’re getting so many good life lessons when you go out there and so when you go you just follow the rules and you have so much fun. I grew up out there it’s such a great experience.”
Competitions include pistol offhand and bench, 22 and center fire, 22 rifle open sight and scoped, center fire open sight and scoped, top-10 shooters tournament and shotgun trap shoot.
The entry cost is $5 per round and winners of any round will receive a frozen turkey coupon.
Brisket sandwiches with sides also will be available for purchase during the turkey shoot at noon. All proceeds will go towards the Sul Ross Range and Wildlife club.

The Alpine Police Department will host the Porter’s Great Pumpkin Giveaway at the start of the Halloween weekend next week from 11 to 3 that Saturday at the Alpine Visitor Center.
The Giveaway will also include Out West Hay Maze, J-and-C Bounce House, face painting and games by Big Bend Parks and Recreation for Kids and live music from Hadley Kibbe.
Snacks and drinks will be provided by Visit Alpine and it is entirely free,

Fort Davis Independent School District is soliciting sealed bids for two vehicles by no later than 4 p.m. Friday at the Administration Building.
The first vehicle is a 2006 Blue Bird bus with 130,443 miles starting with a minimum bid of $5,000.
The second vehicle is a 2007 Ford Expedition X.L. with 215,337 miles with a minimum bid of $4,000.
All vehicles will be sold as-is with no implied or explicit warranty and no refunds will be provided after the transaction.
