Good evening, today is Tuesday, October 18th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales participated in a ceremony at the Blackwell School in Marfa Tuesday commemorating the school’s designation as a National Historic Site.
He joined with the National Parks Conservation Association, members of the Blackwell School Alliance, Blackwell Alumni and local officials for the ceremony.
Gonzalez and Texas Senator John Cornyn introduced the legislation designating the school, which was signed into law Monday.
Blackwell was the “Mexican School” in Marfa before schools were integrated beginning in the 1960s but local efforts have preserved the old school.
A full week of events for this year’s Sul Ross Homecoming will have a Halloween image, “Nightmare on Lobo Lane,” with celebrations for students, alumni and the public.
Homecoming Week will start Saturday with Braxton Keith at the Ole Cristal Bar from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. with dancing and food trucks.
A court introduction and a hypnotist will be at the Espino Conference Center at Sul Ross from 8 to 9:15 p.m. Sunday.
The school week will start Monday with a pep rally by the Sul Ross Cheer Team at the University Center.
Tuesday will see a “Brand the Town” with drive-through window painting and drive-through trick or treating from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gallego Center lower parking lot.
Students, Alumni and the public will be able to meet the basketball teams and participate in games during Lobo Madness from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Gallego Center.
On Thursday all of Alpine will be able to see the lighting of the Bar-S.R.-Bar on Hancock hill to the east of the city when it gets dark.
Also on Thursday will be the Halloween Extravaganza with a haunted house, face painting, games and food at the Graves Pierce Complex from 10 p.m. to midnight.
A parade at 7:30 Friday will run from the downtown post office down Holland Avenue to Cockrell, ending at Jackson Field.
Then a Bonfire will be at the old track field next to the football stadium followed by a pep rally until 11 p.m. on the intramural field.
Homecoming Week will end where it started at the Ole Crystal Bar for the Lobos in the Night Homecoming Bash from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
The Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend will host this year’s Zuzu Verk Memorial Walk and Vigil at 5:30 Wednesday.
The walk will honor victims and survivors of domestic violence by gathering from 5:30 to 5:45 at the Sul Ross Morelock Academic Building parking lot next to the library.
At 6 p.m. participants will begin to walk down Sul Ross Avenue to the Brewster County Courthouse for refreshments and a presentation from the Crisis Center.
Zuzu was a Sul Ross student in 2016 when she was killed and her body buried in Sunny Glenn west of Alpine.
Her then boyfriend Robert Fabian was convicted of murder and evidence tampering and was sentenced to life in prison.

The Swifts, one of Alpine’s most popular musical groups, will host a performance at the Holland Hotel on Wednesday, October 26, by visiting singer and songwriter Michael Hearne.
The evening will feature music from The Swifts followed by a set from Hearne starting at 7 p.m.
Hearne is the cousin of Eden Hinshaw whose singing voice is one of the anchors of The Swifts’ sound.
Hinshaw said she grew up in a very musical family with playing and singing together and that was a big part of growing up for both her and Michael.
Hearne established himself as a staple of the Taos music scene over many years and since then has made his home in Nashville and Austin when not actively touring.

La semana escolar comenzará el lunes con una reunión de ánimo del equipo de porristas de Sul Ross en el Centro Universitario.
El martes habrá un “Brand the Town” con pintura de ventanas de autoservicio y truco o trato de 6 a 8 p.m. en el estacionamiento inferior del Centro Gallego.
Alumnos, exalumnos y el público podrán conocer a los equipos de baloncesto y participar de partidos durante Lobo Madness de 8 a 9:30 de la tarde el Miércoles en el Centro Gallego.
El jueves, todo Alpine podrá ver la iluminación del logo de Sul Ross en la loma Hancock, al este de la ciudad, cuando oscurezca.
También el jueves será el Gran Espectáculo de Halloween con una casa embrujada, pintura de caras, juegos y comida en el Complejo Graves Pierce de 10 p.m. a la medianoche
Un desfile a las 7:30 de la tarde el viernes se llevará a cabo desde la oficina de correos del centro por Holland Avenue hasta Cockrell, terminando en Jackson Field.
Luego habrá una hoguera en el antiguo campo de atletismo al lado del estadio de fútbol seguido de una reunión de ánimo hasta las 11 p.m. en el campo intramuros.
La Semana de Regreso a Casa terminará donde comenzó en el Ole Crystal Bar para Lobos in the Night Homecoming Bash a partir de las 10 p.m. a la 1 a. m.
El Centro de Crisis Familiar de Big Bend organizará la Caminata y Vigilia Conmemorativa Zuzu Verk de este año a las 5:30 el miércoles.
La caminata honrará a las víctimas y sobrevivientes de violencia doméstica al reunirse de 5:30 a 5:45 en el estacionamiento del Edificio Académico Sul Ross Morelock al lado de la biblioteca.
A las 6 pm. los participantes comenzarán a caminar por Sul Ross Avenue hasta el Palacio de Justicia del Condado de Brewster para tomar un refresco y una presentación del Centro de Crisis.
Zuzu era una estudiante de Sul Ross en 2016 cuando la mataron y su cuerpo fue enterrado en Sunny Glenn, al oeste de Alpine.
Su entonces novio, Robert Fabian, fue declarado culpable de asesinato y manipulación de pruebas y condenado a cadena perpetua.

The Swifts, uno de los grupos musicales más populares de Alpine, presentará una actuación en el Holland Hotel el miércoles 26 de octubre del cantante y compositor visitante Michael Hearne.

Hinshaw dijo que creció en una familia muy musical tocando y cantando juntos y eso fue una gran parte del crecimiento tanto para ella como para Michael.
Hearne se estableció como un elemento básico de la escena musical de Taos durante muchos años y desde entonces ha establecido su hogar en Nashville y Austin cuando no está de gira activamente.
