The Alpine Humane Society has responded to what it calls “vicious rumors” about its finances.
In an open letter, Executive Director Jeanine M. Bishop describes how the society, a 501(C)(3) tax exempt non-profit, uses revenue from a one-million-dollar donation.
Dr. Helen Cole of Sul Ross State University donated the money to create a trust and the Humane Society receives interest from the principal, but it is limited in how much it can receive.
Bishop wrote that the largest revenue source for its operations comes from the Alpine Thrift Store and Cattery on 5th Street in Alpine.
The trust provides less than half of the budget in the best of times. And interest rates generally are way below average these days, resulting in even less revenue from the trust. Bishop writes that rumors about the size of the trust account have resulted in a loss of donations to the society and they are struggling to keep up.

The Alpine Public Library has scheduled a new author talk from 4 to 6 Friday.
Mike Lowrie will speak about his book “House of De Zavala: The Legacy of the Black Heart Stone.”
Based on actual events and true Texas history, this is a fast-paced thrill ride through Texas and Northern Mexico, fraught with danger. It features a cast of unpredictable characters led by Luis De Zavala, a rookie archaeologist and direct descendant of one of the Founding Fathers of the Republic of Texas.
And the library’s final Travel Talk of the year will be next Friday, the 27th with “The Destination of the Journey: Exploring America from Coast to Coast and Beyond.”
Valerie Naylor, retired superintendent of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, now lives in Alpine and worked at Big Bend National Park early in her 31-year career. She told us her talk will be about traveling and she wants to see every bit of the U.S.A., including the territories, and appreciating everything she sees. That includes visiting every county in the United States.The talk will be in the A.E.P. room of the library at 805 West Avenue E. It will start at 7 on the evening of October 27.

The Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserve will be open next weekend with overnight camping available.
Gates wilk open at 8 Friday morning and close at 5 Sunday afternoon. No reservations are required and no limits on numbers in attendance.
