Good evening, today is Friday, October 14th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Sul Ross State University Theatre Program will premiere Sarah Ruhl’s “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” this weekend at the Studio Theatre in Room 105 at the Francois Fine Arts Building.
In the plot, the heroin Jean unexpectedly discovers a cell phone owned by a mysterious stranger and is taken on an adventure, meeting the eclectic people surrounding his life.
Director Bret Scott said Sarah Ruhl wrote an intricate and offbeat play about the ways modern technology connects and disconnects people.
Everyone is connected by cell phones today and ‘Dead Man’s Cell Phone’ asks if maybe these devices also are disconnecting us.
Premiering at Washington D.C.’s Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in 2007, the play opened Off-Broadway the following year, earning seven Helen Hayes Award nominations.
The Sul Ross Program’s production will run weekends until October 30 with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
Tickets are 15 dollars for general admission, 10 for children 12 and under and seniors 65 and older and free for veterans and active military.
The show runs approximately two hours, including a ten-minute intermission and contains mature themes so parental guidance is suggested for audience members younger than 12.
Early voting for the November 8 General Election starts Monday, October 24, and runs weekdays through Friday, November 4.
Early voting for those in Alpine and nearby will be at the Judge Val Clark Beard Office complex west of the Courthouse.
Hours will be 7 to 7 Mondays and 8 to 6 Tuesdays through Fridays.
Remote Early voting will be at the Marathon Community Center, Panther Junction Visitor Center and the J.W. “Red” Pattillo Community Center.
On Election Day November 8, Precinct One now will be at the Assembly of God Fellowship Hall across from Alpine High School.
Precinct Two will be at the Beard Office complex, Three at the Marathon Community Center, Four at the Alpine Civic Center or Council Chambers and Eight at the Food Pantry.
Precinct Five will be at Panther Junction and Six and Seven at the Pattillo Center.
Alpine Environmental Services and Keep Alpine Beautiful are inviting citizens for the fall sweep community clean up event from 9 to noon Saturday at the Kokernot Lodge.
All next week will be dedicated to celebrating the Friends of the Library Group, the civic organization created to support the Alpine Public Library on Friends of Libraries Week.
Friends was established in 1949 and has continuously supported the library through volunteering and fundraising activities.
The library relies heavily on the federally-chartered non-profit organization, which is responsible for about a third of its operating budget.
And Friends members and supporters volunteered for more than four thousand hours of service last year.
Library Director Don Wetterauer said the library is stronger with the help of the Friends and funds they have helped raise are crucial to its success.
Friends’ activities have included assisting in children’s programs, teaching English as a Second Language and High School Equivalency students.
They also have sold used books during special sales in the Re-Reads bookstore and helped with the annual silent auction during Artwalk.
Friends president Chris Ruggia said libraries are critical in providing easy access to information, culture, arts and entertainment for the entire community.
Other officers are Vice President Ellen Ruggia and Secretary Kathy Bork.

La biblioteca depende en gran medida de la organización sin fines de lucro autorizada por el gobierno federal, que es responsable de aproximadamente un tercio de su presupuesto operativo.
Y los miembros y simpatizantes de los amigos se ofrecieron como voluntarios para más de cuatro mil horas de servicio el año pasado.
