Good evening, today is Thursday, October 13th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Brewster County Sheriff’s office reported by Facebook Thursday that two local businesses reported getting scam calls.
They reported a caller from (432) 217-5952 identified himself as Sergeant Matthew Jones, badge number 0913, and said they had missed a summons and had warrants for their arrest.
The caller claimed to work for Sheriff Ronny Dodson, who warned citizens never to release any information over the telephone.
Scammers will try to get ID and bank account numbers to rip off the victim.
Dodson said that those who may have an active warrant go by the Sheriff’s office and visit a deputy, who can quickly confirm the existence of a warrant.
Candidates for the Midterm elections November 8 met in Terlingua Monday to answer questions and debate over a variety of topics.
Running for Brewster County Judge are Republican Greg Henington and Democrat Oscar Cobos.
Henington has a business background and participates in the Tourism Board, Water Board, Big Bend Hospital District and is a chief paramedic and firefighter.
Henington: “My role is to be as a servant to that community to let us accomplish the things that we need to get done. That’s why I want to do this.”
Cobos has been in the community prioritizing local initiatives, water rights, property rights and the people of Brewster County.
Cobos: “My main objective on being a judge is, first of all, people. To have an open-door policy for people. I can see special interests a mile away. And that’s one thing that I’ve confronted for years in city and county issues.”
For County Commissioner Precinct Two Republican Mark Chiles challenges incumbent Sara Colando.
Chiles cares about infrastructure, affordable housing, Terlingua Fire and E.M.S., establishing a medical clinic and fuel.
Chiles: “I’m running for this position in order to be of service. As I said that’s one of my priorities, one of my things. And my services to the community in which it gives me and my family the ability to live.”
Incumbent Colando touted her participation in getting a health clinic in South County and her current projects in fixing the trash problems and furthering economic development.
Colando: “I’m hoping that ya’ll give me your vote again in November so I can get these projects finished and continue to make Brewster County a better place for all of us to live in and work and start a business and raise a family.”
The final two candidates at the meet were Republican Paul Rashott and Democrat Tim Relleva for Justice of the Peace Precinct Two, the seat vacated by retiring Jim Burr.
Rashott’s experience as a deputy sheriff has given him a strong belief in the rule of law and improving the community.
Rashott: “That is something that is very important. We have I think a wonderful system in Brewster County, and I’d like to continue with that.”
Relleva stepped up to the plate after no one signed up to be a candidate and hopes his experience in a variety of careers makes a positive impact in the community.
Releva: “Managing resources and guiding people are what this job is all about. And that’s what the JP position is about. I feel like I can be effective and make a difference in peoples lives.”
Alpine Environmental Services and Keep Alpine Beautiful are inviting citizens for the fall sweep community clean up event from 9 to noon Saturday at the Kokernot Lodge.
Participants will meet at the parking log at 1104 Loop Road in Alpine and help clean trash along the Alpine Creek section by the lodge.
