Our Congressman Tony Gonzales and Brad Wenstrup of Ohio have introduced a bill to treat fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction.

Congressman Wenstrup, a member of the Doctors Caucus, said fentanyl has become the number one cause of death for Americans ages 18 to 45.

Just one pill, or even touching the drug, can cause immediate death. Often referred to an “overdose,” fentanyl is more often a poisoning.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said nearly 13 thousand pills of fentanyl have been seized on our border so far this year, an amount that could kill nearly three billion people.

And Wenstrup said the illicit fentanyl they’re not able to catch makes its way into every community across America, killing our families and friends.

Brewster County commissioners Tuesday approved an interlocal agreement with Ector County for overflow prisoners to be housed in Brewster County Jail.

Sheriff Ronny Dodson said the county had relied on federal prisoners but the government has changed some of its criteria.

Ector County has to approve the agreement and Dodson said he may also work a deal with Midland County.

The amount other agencies pay to house their prisoners here helps Dodson with revenue to meet expenses in his budget.

Alpine School Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart has announced that Porter’s Thriftway has named Susana Hernandez Teacher of Month for September.

Mrs. Hernandez has been with Alpine Middle School for six years, teaching eighth-grade math.

Principal Judith Pardo-Alferez said Hernandez serves as a teacher mentor, has served on campus committees and makes math fun and understandable for students

She is married to Froylan Hernandez and is the mother of two daughters and a son

Dr. Rinehart said the district is grateful to Porter’s for the ways they support teachers, students, schools and the community.
