November 9th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Wednesday, November 9th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

Overnight Tuesday and on Wednesday morning’s news, we had results on how Brewster County voted in some key races. Most incumbents held on state and district wide.

Governor Greg Abbott carried Brewster County and went on to defeat perennial candidate Beto O’Roarke statewide by 59% to 44%.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Attorney General Ken Paxton, Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and Comptroller Glen Hagar all won re-election.

Our Congressman Tony Gonzales held off two challengers with 60% of the vote and Eddie Morales held on to our Texas House seat over Katherine Parker with almost 56%.

As reported earlier, Republican Greg Henington won over challenger Oscar Cobos with 60% of the vote for county judge.

Democrat Sara Allen Colando earned 54% over Republican Mark Chiles for county commissioner, Precinct 2.

And down south, Republican Paul Rashott defeated Democrat Tim Relleva with just 7 votes to replace retiring Jim Birr for Justice of the Peace.

Front Street Books will host a presentation with the author Sergio Troncoso and editor Jessica Powers of “Nobody’s Pilgrim’s” at 6 p.m. Thursday.

This is Troncoso’s 8th authored book and Power’s 9th published book. “Nobody’s Pilgrim’s” is an adventure novel centered around three 17-year-old protagonists.

Through their perilous journey across the country, they become friends in search of a better life.

Troncoso said he chose teenagers because of his own hope in younger people and their ability to be open and connect with each other.

Troncoso: “There’s a lot of hope in what they do. Yes a lot of rash decisions, but also a lot of grit. And sometimes, when these kids are faced with trouble, people are after them, people get to them and then they escape … they don’t give up.”

Tronsoco grew up in Ysleta and has now won multiple awards for his eight books, teaches fiction and nonfiction at the Yale Writer’s Workshop and graduated from Harvard and Yale.

Troncoso: “When I was this poor kid growing up in Ysleta, what propelled my imagination, what gave me an idea that I could go beyond the poverty in the border was reading. So reading and storytelling really played a very important part in ‘Nobody’s Pilgrim’”
