Good evening, today is Tuesday, November 8th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
It’s all pretty much over but the counting. Today was election day across the country and results will be coming in shortly.
For the first-string procrastinators, you still have a bit more than an hour and a half to do your duty for democracy.
Voters are choosing a full slate of candidates for federal, state and local offices other than President, for this is a mid-term election for that office.
Texas does not have a U.S. senator on the ballot because both John Cornyn and Ted Cruz also are in off years of six-year terms.
Our Congressman, Republican Tony Gonzales, faces both Democrat John Lira and Independent Frank Lopez Junior in his bid for a second term.
Republican Governor Greg Abbott faces a much-publicized challenger from Democrat Beto O’Roarke but also Libertarian Mark Tippetts and Green Party candidate Delilah Barrios.
Locally, the most interest seems to be on the race for County Judge to replace Eleazar Cano, who chose not to run for re-election.
In that race, Republican Far Flung Adventures owner and Terlingua Fire and E.M.S. Director Greg Henington faces community and political organizer Democrat Oscar Cobos.Stay tuned for local election results this evening and we’ll have the latest on tomorrow’s local news.
Sul Ross State University’s family day is Saturday with activities, events and a football game from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Sul Ross Student Affairs Vice President Ben Telesca said family day is an opportunity for families to spend time with their students and the Alpine community.
Telesca: “We want to showcase the beauty of Alpine, the beauty of the Big Bend to all of those families and get them to come back as well. We want to make sure that everyone in town is aware that’s going on. We have the most hospitable individuals around.”
It will kick off with the family day service project at the Gallego Center’s First Floor Fishbowl from 8 to 11 a.m. in partnership with the Big Bend Conservation Alliance.
Students, faculty and staff will volunteer by planting trees for local residents. Families are welcome to attend with their students and must register in advance to volunteer.
From 10 to 11:30 will be Family Day check-in at the first floor of the Morgan University Center.
Families will get information about Alpine, visit the Museum of the Big Bend, find gear at the campus bookstore and explore the Sul Ross Campus.
From 11 to 1, B.B.T. will host a Family Day Tailgate at Lobo Lane at Jackson Field with food and games, which Telesca said is open to the public.
Telesca: “You don’t have to reserve a spot out there, we have plenty of space if you want to come out and tailgate with us and support Sul Ross football make it so. Come on down, bring your grills, and let’s have a great time.”
Family day will end with the Lobo Football team facing Southwestern University for their last game of the season with kickoff at 1.

The Archives of the Big Bend will produce a “Nerd Nite” at 6 p.m. Thursday at Alpine Wine at 116 North 5th Street.
Guest speakers will be Stephen Hummel of McDonald Observatory, Matt Walter of the Museum of the Big Bend and Rebecca Potts of Yale University, speaking on home improvements.
Each speaker will talk for about 20 minutes and it promises “tons of fun” with discussions about what they call “nerdy” topics.
Admission is free but guests will pay for their food and drinks.

El día familiar de la Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross es el sábado con actividades, eventos y un partido de fútbol americano de 8 a. m. a 4 p. m.
El vicepresidente de Asuntos Estudiantiles de Sul Ross, Ben Telesca, dijo que el día familiar es una oportunidad para que las familias pasen tiempo con sus estudiantes y la comunidad de Alpine.
Comenzará con el proyecto de servicio de día familiar en el primer piso del Centro Gallego de 8 a. m. a 11 a. m. en asociación con la alianza de conservación del Big Bend.
