Perrie Lee Little Whalen died on October 28. She was 78.
Perrie was born in Tucumcari, New Mexico but her family moved to Midland, where she grew up.
Perrie graduated from Midland High School and then attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri. She then transferred to Trinity University in San Antonio, and finally transferred to the University of Texas at Austin where she graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Education.
She later earned a Master of Arts degree from Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
Perrie’s first teaching experience was in Roswell, New Mexico at Sierra Middle School. This was where she met her future husband, Tim Whalen, Jr. After 2 years of teaching in Roswell, the couple moved to Odessa and then to Midland, Texas. Perrie’s teaching career included time in Odessa, Midland, and Greenwood. Perrie ended her 40-year career in education as a consultant at the Region 18 Educational Service Center.
Perrie’s focus was for her students to be able to read, write, and think critically. She encouraged them to think outside conventional guidelines and be themselves. Perrie’s brilliant spirit, radiant smile, and compassionate heart captivated everyone who had the chance to know her.
Perrie is survived by her husband of almost 54 years, Tim Whalen, Jr., and two siblings.
There will be a graveside memorial service at a later date in Roswell, and a notice will be made public.

Over the next few days, the Big Bend area will see a wild swing in temperatures with highs dropping significantly on Sunday and Monday.
According to forecasters with the National Weather Service, a strong cold front will move into the region late Saturday evening, bringing with it much cooler temperatures. Highs in Alpine on Sunday will largely be in the upper 50s, while highs on Monday will see afternoon highs reach the low 60s.
Slightly warmer temperatures will return to the region on Tuesday, with highs expected in the mid-70s.

This is the last weekend to catch the Sul Ross theatre department’s performance of “True West.”
The dark comedy is set in California’s San Gabriel Valley, and explores the tense relationship between two brothers working toward the American Dream.
The final performances are tonight (FRIDAY) and tomorrow (SATURDAY) at 7:30 p.m. and the last show is Sunday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors 65 and older. U.S. veterans and university students, faculty and staff receive free admission.

On Monday, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross will host a training for business owners looking to boost their marketing skills.
On Nov. 10, the center will host a beginner-friendly training on using AI tools in Canva to enhance your workflow and marketing efforts. The one-hour training will introduce you to the basics of Canva’s built-in AI features, including tools for writing text and creating graphics.
The training will be from 11 a.m. to noon.

Later this month (NOVEMBER), the Alpine Public Library invites children 8 years and older for an arts and crafts day, where they’ll make their own trading cards.
Local artist Beth Dixon will lead the class. It takes place Nov. 18 at the library from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.

Next month, the city of Alpine holds their annual hometown Christmas parade.
This year’s event is Saturday, Dec. 13.
If you’re interested in being part of the parade, the lineup begins between 5 and 5:30 at city hall and there’s no registration required, just get in line.
The parade kicks off at 6 p.m. and will head down Holland Ave, turn on 2nd street and end at the Visitor’s Center.
This year’s parade will also celebrate Alpine Police Chief Darrell Losoya, who’s retiring after decades of public service with the city.
At the end of the parade, there will be music from the Big Bend Community Band, refreshments, pictures with Santa, and float winners will be announced.

El próximo mes, la ciudad de Alpine celebra su desfile navideño anual.
El evento de este año tendrá lugar el sábado 13 de diciembre.
Si te interesa formar parte del desfile, la formación comienza entre las 5 y las 5:30 en el ayuntamiento y no es necesario registrarse, solo ponte en la fila.
El desfile comenzará a las 6 p.m. y recorrerá la avenida Holland, girará en la calle 2 y terminará en el Centro de Visitantes.
El desfile de este año también rendirá homenaje al jefe de policía de Alpine, Darrell Losoya, que se jubila tras décadas de servicio público a la ciudad.
Al finalizar el desfile, habrá música de la Banda Comunitaria de Big Bend, refrigerios, fotos con Santa Claus y se anunciarán los ganadores de las carrozas.
