Good evening, today is Monday, November 5th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
A mural by famed muralist Stylle Read on the American Legion Hall in Alpine, subject of a ribbon cutting this week, can be a history lesson for many, the post commander said Monday.
Andy Ramos said the mural honors the men and women and those who died or were injured and the local heroes during past wars from World War I to the War on Terrorism.
The murals, which wrap around the Legion Hall, also display the armor and weapons used in defeating aggressors.
He said the Legion Post got local donors to contribute to a fund to pay Read for the murals, raising more than his fee of $26,500.
He said a plaque will be created to thank all the donors.
Ramos said he was concerned about how little many people know about those who sacrificed so much, including the last full measure of devotion, to keep us free.
He said many have no clue about what took place in our wars and this can be a history lesson about what it took to protect our way of life.
The Alpine Ambassadors and other dignitaries have been invited to the ribbon cutting at 2 p.m. Friday , which also happens to be Veterans Day.
The Hal Flanders Recycling Center has updated scheduling, rules and regulations for the City of Alpine.
The Center will now be open from 9 to 11:50, close for lunch, then continue operation from 1 to 4:50 Tuesday to Saturday. The shorter hours are due to a lack of technicians.
Since September, the center has joined plastic, newspaper and mixed paper into one compactor, which means that citizens won’t have to separate them at home.
Environmental Services Coordinator Adelina Bealle reminded citizens not to put anything in dumpsters that isn’t produced in your day-to-day living.
If the dumpster is full, go to the next one or contact the city.
Don’t put anything by the dumpster or next to the dumpster and don’t put things like furniture, tires or appliances in them.
Placing items next to the dumpster does not allow for the dump trucks to pick it up, causing a delay in service.
If you do have bulky items, make sure to schedule a pickup at the beginning of the month or drive to the recycling center to drop them off at one of the three new bulk containers.
Beall said these new policies are just ways for the city and residents to work together to keep Alpine beautiful.
Bealle: “This is just simplified for the residents. It’ll simplify it for us as well and it’ll just be easier to recycle.”

The Alpine High School Student Council will host its fall blood drive in partnership with Vitalant (vie-TAL-ent) Blood Services Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the High School Library.

The Archives of the Big Bend will produce a free “Nerd Nite” Thursday at Alpine Wine at 116 North 5th Street.
Guests will be Stephen Hummel of McDonald Observatory, Matthew Walter of the Museum of the Big Bend and Rebecca Potts of Yale University.
It will include speakers, drinks and what it promises will be “tons of fun.”
