Good evening, today is Thursday, November 3rd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
This is the first week of November and coming up Saturday is the ultimate celebration of chili, the granddaddy of all chili cook-offs at Rancho CASI de los Chisos in Terlingua.
It is on the North side of Highway 170, eleven miles west of Study Butte and seven miles east of Lajitas.
The four-day celebration begins each year on Wednesday and culminates on Saturday with the Terlingua International Chili Championship.
Friday is CASI Scholarship Day with judging of International Championships for Beans, Hot Wings and Salsa. All proceeds from entry fees on this day go to the CASI Scholarship Fund.
Sheriff Ronny Dodson posted on Facebook the coffee is hot and the cinnamon rolls are in the oven.
Several deputies are patrolling the Chili Cookoff sites in South Brewster County for the rest of the week.
Artwalk Alpine, the longest-running arts festival in west Texas, will be back again this year on November 18 and 19 in downtown Alpine.
Now in its 29th year, Artwalk will highlight the works of many west Texas artists and celebrate the arts along with several local businesses.
Featured artist this year is E. Dan Klepper, who creates large-scale mixed-media presentations that capture what he calls the “wild untamed landscape of rural Texas.”
New Executive Director Ty Muennink said they chose Klepper because his works not only reflect the beautiful Big Bend, but where Artwalk began and where it’s headed.
Artwalk Alpine began as a small grassroots organization in 1994 with a handful of artists and gallery owners, including Artwalk Founder and C.E.O. Kerri Blackman.
Blackman has relinquished the executive director title but remains active in the organization, first known as Gallery Night.
The event grew in size and popularity over the years and now is one of the city’s top attractions, bringing visitors from far and wide.
Blackman called it “an exciting time.” She said they hope to continue honoring our roots and history while also looking to the future.
Alpine Volunteer Fire units responded to two grass fires Wednesday, one of which they say will produce smoke for a few more days.
The first was a brush fire near Highway 67 that resulted in several different hot spots. A number of bystanders helped fire units keep it from spreading.
Later, the Alpine units helped the Marathon Department with a portion of the landfill on fire. Because of the intensity of the fire, smoke was expected to still be visible for a few more days.
Alpine Independent School District and the University of Texas Permian Basin is offering a Teacher Residency opportunity for current students.
Applicants should have two years of college completed by August 2023 and will get to work with teachers in preparing to become teachers themselves.
Applicants would complete years three and four of undergraduate coursework online through U.T.P.B. during the 2023-24 and 24-25 school years, while still working full-time.
During the 24-25 school year, applicants would complete their fourth year of undergraduate coursework online and work and be paid as a Teacher Resident in Alpine I.S.D.
At the end of that school year, participants will graduate with a bachelor’s degree, teacher certification and a year of teacher training support.
For families that make less than 100 thousand dollars a year, eligible participants might qualify for free tuition and fees through the U.T.P.B. Falcon Free program.
