A private memorial service will be in the future for nationally recognized landscape photographer Jim Bones, who died November 17.
Jim was born on November 1, 1943, in Monroe, Louisiana, and found solace and inspiration in nature and joy in his many friendships.
Russell Lee and J. Frank Dobie were major influences in Jim’s approach to photography and his writing.
Cremation services were entrusted to Mobile Mortician of Texas and condolences may be shared with the family at mmoftexas.com.
This is the big weekend leading into the Christmas Season with a host of activities Friday and Saturday by Historic Alpine and other civic groups.
We have listed these before but a reminder is in order.
The two-day Historic Alpine event starts Friday with businesses offering Historic Alpine’s First Annual Wassail Crawl Holiday Shopping Event from 4 to 7.
Visit your favorite business and some may offer refreshments including Wassail, a traditional English drink including a combination of fruit and spice.
Then the Lion’s Club will join Historic Alpine as it sponsors the tree lighting at the Courthouse Square at 7:15.
Historic Alpine’s Holiday Tour of Homes will be from 1 to 4:30 Saturday followed by its Christmas Stroll down Sul Ross Avenue at 5:30.
Guests will walk along Sul Ross Avenue and enjoy music by regional student bands under the direction of Dr. Andrew Alegria from Sul Ross State University.
The Stroll concludes at the Vaquero House, the headquarters of Historic Alpine, located at 208 N. Cockrell.
Guests will be able to enjoy a small-town front porch concert featuring the tunes of The Swifts.

Down the road, Marathon will have its popular Fiesta de Noche Buena, hosted by the Marathon Chamber of Commerce, as Alpine activities are coming to fruition.
Fiesta de Noche Buena is a local tradition when residents, artists, businesses and visitors ring in the holiday season on the main strip.
Santa Claus parades into town with Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and greets children in the lobby of TransPecos Bank.
People visit and tailgate along the Main Street and shops stay open late with seasonal offerings.
Live music and food offerings make this a festive event.
Earlier Saturday, the Alpine Public Library will offer Christmas Craft where kids of all ages can present their home-made ornaments from 10 to noon.
And The library reminds us that 9 Friday evening is the deadline for the City Bank Community Rewards program.
Voting for Alpine Public Library and sharing the link is an easy way to support its mission to build community, encourage literacy and promote lifelong learning in the region.
The top vote-getter in each category will receive four thousand dollars with a three-thousand- dollar bonus to the organization with the most votes overall.
One vote per hour per email is allowed but automated voting may result in disqualification. You do not need to live in the area to vote.
