Services will be this weekend for Antonio Ybarra Villarreal, who died peacefully Saturday at the age of 74. A viewing will be at 5 Friday at Alpine Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
Rosary will be at 9:30 Saturday with funeral services 10 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marathon and burial to follow.
Antonio was born on December 6, 1948, in Coahuila, Mexico, and later immigrated to the United States. He devoted more than 30 years to the transportation industry as a delivery and bus driver.
Though Antonio did not attain a formal diploma, he understood the importance of education and encouraged his loved ones to pursue academic success. He is preceded in death by three siblings, an ex-wife and her son. Surviving are his wife, a son, several children-in-law, seven siblings, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

About 30 runners turned out over last weekend for the Kishmish Plaza turkey trot benefiting the Alpine Public Library.
Organizer Reagan Stone said he worked with Granada Theatre Owner Benjamin Garcia and, while the runners all seemed to enjoy the run, it fell a bit short of its minimum goal.
He said with 15 thousand dollars, they would be able to open an ice-skating rink at Kishmish for four weekends with 10-dollar skate rentals.
If it reached 25 thousand, it would open for six weeks Thursday through Sunday. But the stretch goal of 40 thousand would allow the rink to open every day for eight weeks and make it free to the public. Stone said present plans are to open the rink for about a month starting in mid-December.
He said they are crowdfunding to help make the first real ice-skating rink in the area a reality.
To that end, they are looking for an individual who would be interested in donating to this program as well as promoting the crowdfund drive.
And he said benefits to individual sponsors could include an inclusive private party as well the possibility of free skates or discounts to guests based on the size of a gift. And they could help spread the word to their network.

The coming weekend is filled with pre-Christmas events and we’ve reported on them in recent days.

The West of the Pecos Women’s Club has invited the public to its Annual Christmas Party at 6:30 Friday December 8 at the Big Bend Telephone Company Media Room.
Potluck and finger food will be offered and guests should bring a new, unwrapped gift for a child in a Brown or Blue Santa gift drive.

Speaking of Brown and Blue Santa drives, all area law enforcement agencies in the area are gearing up for their own drives.
Brewster County Sheriff Ronnie Dodson posted on the department’s Facebook page that its personnel and jail trustees will accept Brown Santa donation collection at the Sheriff’s Office.
They join Alpine and Marfa Police Departments that have announced their Blue Santa programs.
Check with your agency of choice. Some prefer wrapped presents while others want the unwrapped. Just take them to the office of the agency of choice.
Then the law enforcement agency involved will find needy children and arrange for the gifts to be delivered.
Christmas is all about giving and that includes more than just the immediate family.
This program is aimed at those less fortunate who don’t have the resources to make every child happy.
