The Big Bend Sentinel has a Page One story this week about the citizens of Sanderson who are
working to recover from a tornado that ripped through town in June.
It reports a dozen people suffered minor injuries in the storm plus one U.S. Border Patrol agent
who suffered critical injuries.
The twister struck primarily in the residential Lomita Terrace neighborhood west of town but
also caused damage to several businesses in town including two that were leveled.
Those with minor injuries are recovering and the Border Patrol agent, who was not identified in
the story, is with his family and continuing his rehabilitation.
Terrell County Judge Dale Carruthers said Sanderson is so resilient that they are picking
themselves up.
She said volunteers have removed 53 hundred cubic yards of debris, 51 yards if vegetation and
18 tons of tires in the cleanup.
Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College will now be known as S.R.S.U. International after
action last week by the Board of Regents.
The Texas State University System Board voted unanimously for the new name at its regular
meeting.
The change applies only to the Eagle Pass, Del Rio and Uvalde instructional sites, reflecting the
desires of those communities.
They wanted to establish a stand-alone, four-year university along the Texas-Mexico border.
In 2022, Texas State announced plans for a four-year university in the Middle Rio Grande
Region.
After the donation of 100 acres by the Eagle Pass Ranch Partnership, construction is now
underway on the first building in Eagle Pass.
It will be a Student Center and future plans call for expanded facilities and degree offerings.
The Sul Ross instructional sites in Del Rio, Eagle Pass and Uvalde are co-located with Southwest
Texas Junior College.
They offer upper-division and graduate courses and were established as study centers in the
1990s and named Rio Grande College.
The main campus in Alpine will continue to be known as Sul Ross State University.
The next show by the Big Bend Art Council is the Holiday Show which has a deadline of
Tuesday.
Last year, it was Affordable Art but instead of limiting the selling price, this year the council has
decided to limit only the size of artwork.
New rules for this show are that all media are welcome with no price limitation. Size is limited to
no larger than 16 by 20 inches.
The show is planned as a reception scheduled for Thursday, December 5, the same day as the
City Wassail Crawl.
The Crawl is from 4 to 7. Depending upon foot traffic, the gallery may stay open a little longer
than that.
Those participating in the Holiday Show and members of the Big Bend Gallery should plan to
come and have been asked to bring a little snack.
The Alpine Public Library has been participating in the Community Rewards program since
2020 when City Bank began including organizations in the Permian Basin.
Each year, the Alpine library has finished in the top five of its category.
The notice thanks its clients for helping it reach that goal and asks help so it can do it again this
year.
It asks that you vote and vote often for the library that is in the Community Contribution and
Leadership category.
New this year, in addition to your vote for A.P.L., you can also vote for organizations in other
categories .
Supporters can vote again in one hour and you can cast one vote per email address.
Voting ends at 9 on Monday, December 9.
