Hello, I’m Z and this is the local and area news.
When Porter’s Grocery, which is in the process of becoming a Lowes Grocery, rebuilt the 2nd Street store, it closed its facility at 5 th Street and Sul Ross Avenue.
But several vehicles have been seen from time to time in the parking lot there and a Porter’s radio ad said there are “two stores in Alpine.” That ad has since been corrected.
Sul Ross State University has acquired the old 5 th Street location but no decision has been made on its potential use. Stay tuned.
The Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross State University and five state and U.S. agencies are working toward tracking black bears and mountain lions along the border with Mexico.
The Alpine Avalanche reports the increase in black bear activity in the Big Bend area prompted the study.
Much of this data already are being collected in a bear study being done by a B.R.I. student and the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife.
The Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute will study mountain lion activities. The study has four objectives, including being the first to produce a peer-reviewed publication of effects on large mammals.
Secondly, this project will be looking to provide the types and amounts of litigation efforts for government agencies to consider.
The third objective is to promote the recovery of both black bears and mountain lions by enacting approved mitigation efforts.
And at the conclusion of the research, the teams will be able to provide a final report to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service about the project.
A photograph called “Refresh” by Vicki LeBlanc has won the 2023 500-dollar H.L. Kokernot Award as the first-place winner in the Alpine T.X. Photo Contest.
Judge D.H. Stout said her photo was about how a thirsty dog and cattle can show how hot it is. The winners were announced this week in the Big Bend Sentinel Martin Theophilus took home the second-place Charles Henry Trost Memorial Award and 100 dollars for A.H.S. Homecoming.
Stout said his entry captured Friday Night Lights in Alpine.
Winners of 50 dollars were Lindsey Arnold, Elizabeth Bigouette and Shannon King.
The contest drew 344 photographs by 120 photographers.
The Big Bend Arts Council has reported to its members on its involvement in several events coming up to celebrate the coming Christmas season.
The council will participate in Historic Alpine’s Wassail and Shopping Stroll from 4 to 6:30 Friday and the Christmas Tree lighting at the Courthouse with Santa about 7:15.
The Gallery on the Square will be open until 6:30 to hand out hot drinks such as mulled wine, wassail or hot cocoa.
It also will take part in the Historic Alpine’s Holiday Tour of Homes from 1 to 4:30 on December 2 and its Christmas Stroll down Sul Ross Avenue to Sul Ross for a tree lighting.
It will end with a Christmas Symphony conducted by Dr. Andrew Alegria.
The Arts Council will have its Christmas get together at Gallery on the Square from 5 to 7 December 8.
Then at 7:30 that night, the Big Bend Community Chorale performance will be at the First United Methodist Church.
The City of Alpine December Community Cleanup will be from 9 to noon Saturday at the Cactus Garden at the Highway 90 westbound split east of McDonalds.
The community is invited to help clean up trash along the garden and participate in a tree planting ceremony at 11.

Cuando Porter’s, que está en proceso de convertirse en Lowes Grocery, reconstruyó la tienda de la calle 2da, cerró sus instalaciones en la calle 5ta y Sul Ross.
Pero de vez en cuando se han visto varios vehículos en el estacionamiento y un anuncio de radio de Porter decía que hay “dos tiendas en Alpine”. Desde entonces, ese anuncio ha sido corregido.
La Universidad Estatal Sul Ross adquirió la antigua ubicación de la calle 5ta, pero no se ha tomado ninguna decisión sobre su uso potencial. Manténganse al tanto.
El Instituto de Investigación Borderlands de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross y cinco agencias estatales y estadounidenses están trabajando para rastrear osos negros y pumas a lo largo de la frontera con México.
El Alpine Avalanche informa que el aumento de la actividad del oso negro en el área de Big Bend impulsó el estudio.
Gran parte de estos datos ya se están recopilando en un estudio sobre osos realizado por un estudiante del B.R.I. y el Departamento de Parques y Vida Silvestre de Texas.
El Instituto de Investigación de Vida Silvestre Caesar Kleberg estudiará las actividades de los pumas. El estudio tiene cuatro objetivos, incluido ser el primero en producir una publicación revisada por pares sobre los efectos en los grandes mamíferos.
En segundo lugar, este proyecto buscará proporcionar los tipos y montos de esfuerzos de litigio que las agencias gubernamentales deben considerar.
