Good evening, today is Monday, November 28th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Second Annual Historic Alpine Christmas Stroll, a partnership between Sul Ross State University and the Alpine Historical Association, will be this Saturday.
It all starts at 4:30 with kids crafts at the Old School House, known to many as the old Sunshine House, at 207 East Sul Ross Avenue.
Musicians from Alpine and Fort Stockton will serenade guests as they see all the historic homes and lights on East Sul Ross Avenue.
Awards for decorations along the Stroll will be announced including Most Historical, Best Theme, Best Porch, Best Inflatables, Most Creative and Crowd Favorite.
Then the second Christmas tree lighting will be at Lawrence Hall where all the musicians will perform together before a visit from Santa Claus.
Finally, The Swifts will perform at the Vaquero Family House at 208 North Cockrell at 8:15.
Along the way, drinks and goodies will be served by fundraising clubs and organizations.
Sul Ross Avenue will be closed throughout the Stroll, and comfortable walking shoes are encouraged.
A.H.A. Founder and President Abbey Branch said her goal is to encourage holiday spirit, camaraderie and togetherness in the community.
And 30 miles east, the Marathon Chamber of Commerce will host this year’s Fiesta de la Noche Buena on Main Street from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there alongside local vendors with face painting, festive food and beverages.
Music, art gallery openings, caroling and campfire stories also will be available for guests and their families to enjoy.
A recount between incumbent Brewster County Commissioner Sarah Colando and challenger Mark Chiles Monday has been rescheduled until 1 p.m. Saturday.
Results likely will not be known until Monday.
Colando prevailed in the November 8 General Election by 50.6 percent.
The Texas Water Development Board has approved 12.6 million dollars to Presidio County for water and wastewater infrastructure throughout the county.
The Big Bend Sentinel reports funding from the Economically Distressed Area Program will help economically stressed residential areas to provide needed water or sewer facilities.
About nine million dollars will be in the form of a grant while the balance will be in the form of a loan.
Projects include first-time water service to Colonia Las Pampas in southern Presidio County and a new water line to the Fort D.A. Russell section of Marfa.
Others include first-time water and wastewater service to the East Heights section of Marfa and other first-time services to other areas of Marfa and Shafter.
Steering Committee Chairman Trey Gerfers said the programs are part of a massive group effort but more work is still to come.
Presidio County Sheriff’s deputies arrested one individual and recovered several hundred pounds of marijuana on Highway 170 west of Presidio Sunday.
They were helping a Border Patrol agent on a temporary checkpoint when agents referred them to an individual they had stopped and found he was driving without a license.
While interviewing the suspect, deputies reported the driver was exhibiting nervous behavior.
In a search of the vehicle with a police dog, they discovered hidden compartments with 221 bundles totaling more than 360 pounds of marihuana.
The case was referred to Homeland Security Investigations for federal prosecution where the driver will face charges of Possession of Marihuana with intent to distribute.
