Last week, a visitor from a larger city in Texas called a relative who lives here and asked, “Why is everything closed?”
The Big Bend Sentinel has a front-page story this week that could provide an answer to a posing question facing groups like the Alpine Business Alliance. In its efforts to revive the business community after losses from the Covid Pandemic, it has run into some obstacles including the need for hospitality training.
The Sentinel reports on a new hospitality initiative in Fort Davis, the new Mountain View Hospitality Academy.
Starting early next year, the academy says it will offer affordable, accredited training for the hotel and restaurant industry.
The new academy will offer an eight-week course at Mountain Trails Lodge a mile south of Fort Davis that already operates a lodge and café.
The need for hospitality workers has been heightened recently with plans to renovate the Holland, Maverick and Limpia Hotels in Alpine and Fort Davis.
El Cosmico in Marfa also has launched an ambitious expansion plan.
The academy is a project of Mobile Communidad, a nonprofit working to fill community gaps in Jeff Davis County.
It is partnering with Cornell University, the Conrad N. Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership and the Rio Grande Council of Governments.

Sheriff Ronny Dodson has posted on Facebook about a number of reports of scam phone calls they have received recently.
The scam calls refer to warrants, citations and subpoenas for several Brewster County courts and the caller threatens fines and even jail time if these matters aren’t handled.
As always, do not give out personal or financial information over the phone. When in doubt, contact the appropriate court directly to confirm any outstanding matters.
The Alpine Public Library reminded us that the deadline for the City Bank Community Rewards event is coming up before 9 Friday evening.
Voting for the library and sharing the link is an easy way to support its mission to build community, encourage literacy and promote lifelong learning in the region.
The top vote-getter in each category will receive four thousand dollars with a three-thousand- dollar bonus to the organization with the most votes overall.
One vote per hour per email is allowed but automated voting may result in disqualification. You do not need to live in the area to vote.
Voting continues at city.bank/communityrewards.
The City of Alpine and Texas Disposal Systems report that the next monthly bulk pick up will be next week.
Residents must schedule their pickup this week before noon Friday by calling 837-0845.
Once the pick-up has been scheduled, place bulk items on the curb or right of way directly in front of your home.

This is the week Historic Alpine has picked for holiday activities Friday and Saturday to kick off the season.
First is shopping at Alpine’s retail stores for the First Annual Wassail Crawl from 4 to 7 Friday.
Then comes the Brewster County Tree Lighting, presented by Historic Alpine and the Lion’s Club.
And back after years of absence is a Historic Alpine Holiday Home Tour from 1 to 4:30 Saturday.
Conclude the weekend with the Third Annual Award-Winning Historic Alpine Christmas Stroll starting at 5:30 ending at Sul Ross with a second tree lighting.
