A post on “X,” formerly Twitter, reports a group of Texas judges has sent a letter urging President Biden to stop legislation they claim is Texas trying to declare its own wars.
The bill signed by Governor Abbott would permit state judges to deport people, even while they are seeking asylum.
The judges, who were not identified in the post we saw, said the legislation would make local communities less safe.
They say it would interfere with federal immigration enforcement, threaten relationships with other nations and not get us any closer to sound immigration policy.
The bill allocates more than a billion and a half dollars to construct border barriers and makes it a crime to illegally cross the Texas-Mexico border.
Abbott said the bill creates penalties for illegal entry into Texas and authorizes the removal of illegal immigrants apprehended at the border.
He has long contended the present administration has allowed far too many dangerous felons and drugs into the country because of lax border enforcement.
The Alpine Avalanche this week carries a front-page story about the changeover, announced last month, of Porter’s Grocery chain by Lowe’s Markets.
The paper quoted an unidentified Porter’s spokesman as saying the Lowe family and their company culture are the gold standard for family-owned grocers.
He said their approach to business aligns perfectly with Porter’s founding principles and they will be welcomed by existing customers and team members.
Porter’s has added some gourmet products since the 2 nd Street store was upgraded and Lowe’s Director of Marketing Matt Corbin said no immediate changes are predicted.
He said customers or team members should notice few changes after Lowe’s takes over on Friday next week.
B.B.T., formerly Big Bend Telephone, has reached a significant milestone in its mission to connect rural communities to high-speed internet services.
The Alpine company has secured a 25-million-dollar investment from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development department.
In collaboration with a B.B.T. capital contribution of a million and a half dollars, the investment paves the way for the Reconnect 4 Grant Project. This focuses on the deployment of a state-of-the-art, fiber-to-the-premises network, adding more than 272 linear miles of fiber optics in the counties of Val Verde, Terrell and Brewster. This initiative will empower more than 218 households within the region, specifically targeting areas outside the Colonia’s of Comstock, Langtry and Terlingua Ghost Town.
It also will include portions of the rural subdivisions of Salem’s Point, Castle Canyon, Guajia Bay in Val Verde County and Terlingua Ranch in Brewster County.
The Reconnect 4 Grant Project is directed at making high-speed internet not only accessible, but also affordable.

It’s popular Fiesta de Noche Buena, hosted by the Marathon Chamber of Commerce, is coming Saturday next week as Alpine activities are coming to fruition.
Fiesta de Noche Buena is a local tradition when residents, artists, businesses and visitors ring in the holiday season on the main strip.
Santa Claus will parade into town with the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and greet children in the lobby of TransPecos Bank.
Shops will stay open late with seasonal offerings and live music and food offerings will make this a festive event.
