Hello, I’m Z and this is the local and area news.
It’s November and that means Artwalk and it is coming up soon.
Keri Blackmon and John Davis, who started the idea as Gallery Night 30 years ago, were on Last Cup of Coffee with Martin last week.
Martin asked ArtWalk head Keri how it started and she said it was John’s idea.
“Well, I thought it might be nice to have a couple of galleries to just be open one night before Christmas some time. So I went to the Lady at Kiowa Galleries and she said, oh no, we’ve tried that and it doesn’t work.”
That was before Keri acquired the gallery. So Davis went back the next year when she was there. He asked her and she said they should try it.
Originally, it was called Gallery Night and many old timers still call it that but it got so big that it was changed to a two-day event.
It also was moved to the weekend before Thanksgiving so shops could promote holiday shopping. And it turned into ArtWalk. At its largest, it had 32 locations.
Many things came out of it, including some early murals. Those attracted many more and, today, they are a major attraction for Alpine.
This year’s Featured Artist is Alpine’s own Tom Curry. Martin asked about him.
“He’s very popular. He was a graphics illustrator for Texas Monthly, Texas Highways, New York Times. I’ve seen a huge list the other day of what he published. But he’s written books and done his own illustrations for books and he’d done murals. He’s very popular.”
ArtWalk will be November 17 and 18 with many popular events, including the bike zoo with bicycles dressed as animals, live music, art cars with vehicles as painting canvasses and more.
There is one new venue this year, Talent Art at North 8 th Street at Holland.

Dr. Kathy Stein, a professor of English at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, has been named the Assistant Dean of Student Success at the Alpine campus.
The position is new to Sul Ross and will include oversight of institution-wide student retention activities and services related to undergraduate student success.
Dr. Stein will coordinate the development of policies and procedures regarding academic advising and tutoring services on the Alpine campus.
She received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Master of Arts in Professional Writing and Rhetoric from The University of Texas at El Paso.
Dr. Stein was certified as a Developmental Education Specialist by the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State University.
Her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administration also is from UTEP. For more information and to register, email provost@sulross.edu.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has scheduled a free Family Summit for families in West Texas and New Mexico who have lost a loved one to fentanyl and other illegal drugs.
Several government entities that deal with these issues will take part in the meeting from 9 to 4 Mountain time, or 10 to 5 our time, November 9 at Hope City Community Church in El Paso.
The agencies want to hear from families about their loved ones and introduce them to counseling resources. They will have tables at the event.

La DEA ha programado una junta Familiar gratuita para familias del oeste de Texas y Nuevo México que han perdido a un ser querido a causa del fentanilo y otras drogas ilegales.
