Good evening, today is Thursday, November 17th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Funeral services for Aurie Mitchell West of Marfa will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church of Marfa. She died Monday at age 84.
Aurie was born on November 15, 1937, in Marfa where she made her lifetime home with the love of her life, Guy Gene West.
The couple met at Bloys Campmeeting and they were married on September 8, 1954.
Together they continued the family’s heritage and she became a fifth-generation cattle rancher in the state and a fourth generation in Presidio County while raising their five children.
Aurie was preceded in death by her husband and one son. Surviving were a brother, three daughters, a son, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a local Food Bank, Casa Hogar Orphanage or a charity of choice.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit 25-and-a-half miles west-southwest of Mentone Wednesday afternoon at a depth of five-and-a-half miles.
That area is one of the most active for earthquakes in the region. Four aftershocks occurred near the main quake ranging in magnitude from 2.6 to 3.8.
Several citizens reported feeling the quake in Alpine and some said it felt it as very strong. Others said they just felt a small movement.
The Geological Survey said the quake was the third strongest earthquake to occur in Texas since the early 1900s but no damages were reported.
But the City of Alpine notified the public that the earthquake may have disturbed some underground infrastructure.
It asked anyone knowing of any damage or smelling gas to contact the gas department at 294-1529.
The award-winning Historic Alpine Ghost Tours are back for this weekend only.
Now in the third season, the historic walking tours will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday and will include a “spooky drink” at Reata and a nightcap courtesy of the Holland Hotel.
Austin Monthly, San Antonio Magazine and Texas Music Magazine all named their Texas Travel Awards.
They chose the Alpine Historical Association and the Sul Ross State University Theatre Department for best “Under the Radar Activity, Small Market.”
Admission is $20 for adults and 18 for children 12 and under, seniors and college students with valid ID.
Guests are encouraged to wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes for the one-mile walk. The tours are recommended for ages 8 and up.
Tour Director Marjie Scott said the tours are intended to promote the rich history of Alpine while also enjoying some ghost stories from the Big Bend region.
And she said there may be some actual ghost sightings as well.

The Alpine Police Department is celebrating a year of Operation Front Porch, allowing citizens to securely get their packages sent to the police office.
With people’s busy schedule, or vacation travels, sometimes deliveries can be made while residents are away from home.
To guarantee a safe delivery, send packages to your name, Alpine Police Department, 309 West Sul Ross Avenue, Alpine, T.X. 79830.
To pick up the package, you will need a government form of identification and an order of receipt or proof of shipment.
Parents picking up packages addressed to their children must provide proof of guardianship or the child’s identification.
Alpine Police will not charge for the use of the program but will be happy to take a donation of a Christmas Gift for a child for their Blue Santa program.
